Put Indian lives above foreign profits -- Stop the import of dangerous nuclear reactors to Maharashtra.

Hi ,

Profit comes before public safety for our government. They have signed a pact with France to get faulty nuclear reactors from their nuclear corporation Areva, which has a track record of causing nuclear contamination..

This plant is coming up in Maharastra’s Ratnagiri district and is being opposed by people across the region and the country. The location for this reactor is on a high earthquake zone which has been ignored by the environmental impact assessment. This raises concerns about the safety of people around the plant.

After all this, the government is still getting this untested technology and undermining the safety of its people. Over 28,000 people including me have already signed a petition asking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to place lives of people before profit. More signatures on this petition will add strength to the opposition and help put pressure on the PM to take some action.

Can you also add your signature to this petition?

Ask Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to put people before profit | Greenpeace India

The petition says: Put Indian lives above foreign profits -- Stop the import of dangerous nuclear reactors to Maharashtra.

How many of you are ready to sign??

. . . .
Holy Cr@p!!
Nuclear Energy is not a perfect energy solution in my opinion, but there is no alternative. Oh Yes, there is: all of us peg our energy needs & consumption to the level it is today.

I.E. ALL OF US WILL ENSURE THAT FROM TOMORROW, WE WILL NOT CONSUME EVEN 1 WATT MORE OF ENERGY------VOILA, PROBLEM SOLVED!!

That is not the real world, even Greenpeace activists and their establishments cannot do that. Do the Greenpeace people not run fans, air-conditioners and other appliances?
I admire the Greenpeace concerns, but I have not seen any other workable solutions from them to address the "Energy Conundrum".

When that is forth-coming, I will sign the petition.....in blood, if that will help.

. .
i hvn't signed...it
but i want to discuss about it...
if it really propaganda then i will not sign it???

.
58368 has already signed???
target - 100000.

i think there is something true???

Most people don't understand the design of nuclear reactors and just go ahead and sign it just because Greenpeace is promoting it and "green" is the new hip word. That does not mean anything.

but what is this :

also, somewhere on this forum some Chinese had said about there faulty track record..

Some of the things greeenpeace are doing are commendable( like campaign against whaling) but they (like other green activists) try to scare people with their end-of-world scenarios. Some of the things they tell about GM crops are pure lies.

These are 3rd gen EPR reactors being used in Europe and China. Who said they are faulty designs?

.
that mean "which has a track record of causing nuclear contamination" is also a lie..

See Greenpeace is not completely BS. Whaling as an issue does not affect India, but the ship-breaking industry does. Greenpeace ran a long campaign against the environmental hazards caused by ship-breaking in Alang and the hazardous materials being brought in by that method and the poor standards of disposal methods of that waste. Also there is the issue of safety standards of the workmen there which has caused so many accidents. That was a real campaign that Greenpeace ran.

About GM seeds as well Greenpeace also highlighted some serious concerns about the GM seeds. One is very simple, GM seeds, when sowed and grown by the farmers does not yield seeds that can be re-planted. Traditionally, farmers in India planted say a crop of cotton, when the crop was harvested, some of the seed from the 'Cotton Bolls' were kept aside by the farmers to plant the next crop. BT Cotton seeds do not allow that, so the farmer has to go back and buy expensive seeds again from the traders to plant his next crop. Cotton prices kept fluctuating so the farmers sometimes had no money to buy the seed, so he bought on credit. Then came say a drought or untimely rain which destroyed his crop. So he went back to the trader again for credit. Farming is full of variables (at least in India), variable weather, plant diseases, irregular irrigation, varying prices. One of the constants was the farmers constants was, the source of his seeds. GM seeds snatched that also away from him. On the positive side, GM seeds had one advantage, the resistance to pests for example. Cotton was constantly attacked by a pest called the 'Boll-Weevil'. BT cotton reduced that dramatically, but did not or could not eliminate the other variables for the farmer. One interesting statistic is that the maximum suicides in Vidharbha cotton farmers was among those who had grown BT cotton!

The other unknown about GM technology is its effect on food crops. Nobody is clear about that yet. That is the reason why the Ministry of Environment, Jairam Ramesh disallowed permission for BT Brinjals, which would have been the first GM food crop permitted in India.
So GM technology is one very serious issue that Greenpeace among many organisations helped to highlight. We need to closely examine and analyse all matters that stand to affect us and our environment.
Nuclear Power is no exception, except that it has been around longer and studied in greater depth than GM tech. No need to make knee-jerk decisions.

some senior chinese members (like cardsharp etc) about 2 month ago....
i have checked about AREA's track record & i couldn't find a single complaint or disaster regarding there reactor...& the upcoming power plant in jaitapur is 1 of the safest in the world...& similar one is already at completion stage in Finland by AREA... & from when did u start believing on chinese members that too Cardsharp LOL....china themselves have awarded them a 11 billion dollar contract for building a power plant...chinese are using the same design given to them by AREA during 1990's...so get a life...stop getting paranoid by the statements of this free world hippies....
