It's definitely bragging rights trumping practicality. The money would be infinitely better spent putting humans on the moon or Mars. THAT is bragging rights!
Also, haven't engineers come to the conclusion that the super-towers are so heavy that even with bedrock support, they collapse the earth beneath them, and sink?
Last thought - the bragging rights last as long as it takes for another country to beat it. These days, that's only taking a few years. It's like the world record for the 100 meters dash, as the record goes from 11.12, 11.08, 10.96, 10.89, etc.
Why would we spend trillions trying to go to space when a country such as yours have already reached building a space station?? We have started a space exploration program last year btw...just putting that out there.....
Besides this building is 0% government is just some rich dude fulfilling what must be one of his life's dreams. If he wants to spend his money on building buildings or buying Yachts its his choice. But if you ask me I would pick him building a building over buying a yacht and a few mansions.
