A ground force of 2,800 pro-government troops, accompanied by main battle tanks and armored personnel carriers, pushed toward a Houthi-controlled military base in Yemen Monday August 3rd, as Saudi-led coalition airstrikes cleared their path. The Al-Anad military base, located just north of Yemen’s port city of Aden, is the main Houthi encampment in the country's south.

The pro-government troops deployed heavy armour supplied by their backers in the assault on Al-Anad base, some 60 kilometres (35 miles) north of Aden, military sources said. “The battle to retake Al-Anad base has begun,” a military source told AFP.

Hundreds of troops and militia equipped with tanks and armoured vehicles supplied by the coalition deployed around the base before Monday’s attack, their commander Fadhl Hassan said. Another source said Saudi-led warplanes were providing air cover for the loyalist forces, who launched the offensive from a mountainous region west of Al-Anad. The airbase, in the southern province of Lahj, housed US troops overseeing a drone war against Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) until shortly before Iran-backed Huthi rebels overran it in March. The insurgent advance, which took them all the way into the port city of Aden, forced President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi and his internationally recognised government into exile in Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi-owned Al-Hayat newspaper said 1,500 troops, most of them from the United Arab Emirates, had reached Aden. The UAE is a member of the coalition which has carried out more than four months of air strikes targeting the rebels and their allies.

Images of Leclerc main battle tanks, which are operated by the UAE land forces and Presidential Guard strike force, BMP armored vehicles, and M-ATVs being offloaded at a port in the southern city of Aden appeared on social media Sunday. The equipment from the UAE was delivered from a forward operating base located off the coast of the Red Sea. The UAE Army currently uses almost 388 Leclerc MBTs, as well as Russia-made BMP-3 APCs.

The recent series of defeats has opened the rebels eyes to a reality that they may end up actually losing the country.

We shall see if and when the war gets to North Yemen. AFAIK Houthis still control Lahji which is in South Yemen. 5 months into the war and we are still in South Yemen. Taiz is 1,000+ meters above sea level. Aden is at sea level. Southerners are not even physically adapted for the thin air in North Yemen. Zaidis will never want to be ruled by a Sunni president. The further north the war goes, the more difficult it will be for southerners and the more will be their casualties from ambushes.

Coalition Source: 2,800 Saudi Troops in Yemen

An Arab coalition source confirmed to Defense News that 2,800 troops landed in Yemen on Aug. 2 and are targeting the country's largest military base.

The coalition source stated that the forces — comprised mostly of Saudi special operations, intelligence and logistics personnel — are placed to secure Aden and take over Al-Anad military base north of Aden.

"The units are also supported by personnel and equipment from the United Arab Emirates and trained Yemeni fighters," the source said.

Images of LeClerc main battle tanks, which are operated by the UAE land forces and Presidential Guard strike force, BMP armored vehicles, and M-ATVs being offloaded at a port in the southern city of Aden appeared on social media Sunday.

The equipment provided by the UAE, the source stated, was delivered from a forward operating base located off the coast of the Red Sea.

"The equipment and personnel were prepared at our staging base in the Red Sea for the landing," he added.

Gulf-based geopolitical and military analyst Theodore Karasik said the throughput of Saudi-led coalition equipment from sea to land signals more ground offensives ahead to expand the coalition's gains in and around Aden.

"The equipment is an impressive mix of land force vehicles and support that is meant to give the pro-Hadi forces [loyal to Yemen's exiled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi] a sharp edge," he said.

A key question, however, is how the opposition will counterattack what is seen as a conventional force, Karsik said.

"We have seen before conventional forces being forced into retreat, but the Saudi-led forces are using a mix of hybrid warfare combined with tribal support to achieve superiority in key areas," he said. "Importantly, the successes in southwestern Yemen shows how the Saudi-led forces may be the embryonic steps of a joint Arab force."

Military forces with the United Arab Emirates train with U.S. Marines stationed at 29 Palms, Calif., Dec. 14, 2003. On Aug. 3, 2015, the UAE deployed ground troops, along with tanks and armored vehicles, to the southern port of Aden, Yemen, to assist pro-government forces fighting Shia Houthi rebels. The Emirati troops almost immediately took part in the capture of the country's largest air base, according to Yemeni and U.S. officials.

United Arab Emirates deploys ground forces to Yemen conflict

The United Arab Emirates has deployed a brigade of ground troops, along with tanks and armored vehicles, to assist pro-government forces fighting in Yemen.
Quoting senior Yemeni and U.S. military officials on Monday, The New York Times reports Emirati troops arriving in the country and taking part in an assault on its largest air base.

The al-Anad base, in southern Yemen's Lahej province, fell to pro-government forces after days of battle with Shia Houthi rebels that caused heavy casualties on both sides, according to Yemen's defense ministry.

Local reporters told the BBC the Emirati troops were acting in an advisory role, while a Yemeni military official denied they had landed in Aden. The New York Times quoted a senior Yemeni military commander, however, as saying they had a direct role in the attack.

The deployment of Emirati troops into Yemen represents the first major ground involvement by the coalition formed by Saudi Arabia against the Houthis.

The coalition, which also includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, Morocco, Sudan and Egypt, began conducting airstrikes against Houthi positions in March, following advances by the rebels that forced President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi into exile.

The coalition's efforts have been largely in support of Hadi loyalists, with an ultimate goal of restoring the deposed leader.

In July, pro-Hadi forces, bolstered by coalition airstrikes and armored vehicles supplied by the UAE, captured the southern port of Aden, where an estimated 3,000 Emirati troops are reported to have landed Monday.

Al-Anad lies about 30 miles north of the port city, on a major intersection that provides access to Yemen's southwestern provinces.

Southern Yemeni commanders told The New York Times small contingents of Saudi and Emirati troops had been fighting in Yemen for the last few weeks, and a senior U.S. military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Saudi Arabia and the UAE's aggressive intervention was directly linked to their concern over Iran's expanding influence.

The coalition has accused Iran, Saudi Arabia's regional rival, of militarily backing the Houthis, which Tehran has denied. The rebels acknowledge an alliance with Iran but deny acting on its behalf.
