It was 2 days ago. Just Nother meeting of the Saudi-Pakistani-Chinese alliance.
Was that a sarcastic comment?
By all accounts the Chinese deputy PM who heads the MSS in China (it's ISI) was to discuss counte-terror co-operation with Pakistan. In other words they are also fed up with terrorists from Xinjiang going to Pakistan (FATA) getting trained and blowing things up back in China.
The Saudi visit was about "cooling tensions" between Pakistan and the US. In other words, the Saudi's are acting as a go between to knock some sense into the Pakistanis who are themselves pretty mad after Rabbani who was close to the Saudis too got blown up by the Haqqani network- a group closely aligned to Al Qaeda - which in turn is a group that is mortal enemies of the Al-Saud family.
Regarding land exercises, these were planned ages ago. India had land exercises beginning of this year and naval exercises as well last year but that doesn't mean a Saudi-Indian defence "alliance" has been formed.
Infact, if there would be an axis to form, it would be more likely to be an Iran-Pakistan-China axis or atleast Iran-Pakistan due to their anti-American stand on ideological grounds. A fact that was even aluded to in Arab news editorial recently.
Nonetheless, it would be foolish to pretend that there is not concern among people in Saudi Arabia at the developing relationship between Islamabad and Tehran and, to a lesser extent, Beijing. Last week, President Asif Ali Zardari was in Jeddah to explain Pakistans geopolitical policies and allay such concerns but it has not removed the view that Pakistan, Iran and China appear to be forming an axis.
