Saudi fighter Jet shot down over Yemen by Huothi Air defence force.

Predators flir detecting-identifying human heat signature from 3km altitude.

Considering an after burning jet engine is much hotter there is no reason for a ground based flir system to not to passively detect a fighter jet about 7-10kms altitude from short horizontal ranges like 5km in open sky suitable for point defense.

Next generation sams are much lighter because of composite materials and can be carried even by several infantry. For example pantsyrs rocket is about 80kg and can reach 15km altitude.

Manpads still have its use which are easy to deploy anywhere by anything and when facing low altitude helicopters for example but they are almost no use for high flying targets like fixed wing aircraft. Lightweight measures need to be developed to complement manpads that can be carried by light vehicles or even infantry by lightweight missiles and ir-eoptical system parts carried separately to be assembled for use complementing manpads.

Mig 35 OLS claims to have detection range of 20km for vehicles and 40km for aircraft.

It can be intalled on a small vehicle like a jeep. Range can be calculated by a laser range finder or by estimation of ground operator from closer ranges. Or a small range finding radar having much longer reach than a laser range finder that just emits for a split second at the beginning and several times during midcourse without being detected to calculate the initial distance and rest estimated by a computer by looking at the direction continiously coming from ir sensor.

Actually I think distance finding radar does not need to track the plane just a very narrow beam sent to obtained direction from ir sensor is enough to get distance. So target can be illuminated all the time continiously without the radar position revealing itself to the plane.

As mentioned many modern missiles like pantsyrs are small enough to be easiy carried similar to manpads and can reach high altitudes like 10-15km.
