Saudi Crown Prince to Announce $20B Investment Projects in Pakistan

People in many rich countries can afford a cook, a cleaner and a driver. Often they themselves do worse things than slouching around and wear worse things than cool white clothes.

Think of it as: What has Saudi Arabia done for Pakistan, and what has Iran done for Pakistan? Make a list. Here's a start:
Iran: Saudia:
Kulbushan $ 6b bailout
... ...
Now tell me, who should Pakistan be closer to?
Iran not only sent Kulbushan but also threatened Pakistan with a revolution

Saudi don't only keep coming up with bail-outs repeatedly but also thwarted Israeli and Indian designs against Pakistan's nuclear assets (albeit with USA provided Intelligence). Some people even accuse them of funding Pakistani nuclear program

.
Can anyone explains the relations between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia , Iran and Turkey? What's really going on between them?

Ah, i remember that. Shah Faisal, Moammar Gaddhafi... where will we find such statesmen again? Did not know about the 'revolution' threat, however.

Basically, despite the propaganda you might hear from the indian press on the internet, which is then echoed by some western sources, Pakistan is not an isolated country and has very good diplomatic ties with many countries. The three particular countries you listed happen to be very close and friendly with Pakistan, maybe not as close as China is, but still very close. At a time when China is short of allies, Pakistan can actually play an extremely effective role in broadening the scope of China's relations with these and other nations of west asia, just like Pakistan played a big role in the improvement of ties between China and USA during Mao's time.

The only problem now is Iran's regional policies, which are dangerous, sectarian and demonstrably pose a threat to the core interests of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries, and Turkey. For example, Iran's support of Houthis in Yemen plunged the country into civil war, Iran's support of USA and the northern alliance in Afghanistan, Its support of USA (that's right) in Iraq, its support of Assad in Syria significantly lengthened the Iraq War, Syrian Civil War and the current Afghan War. Iran's covert cooperation and open faciltation of Indian geostrategy has caused significant problems for Pakistan in Afghanistan and internally as well. While in the past, Iran, like Saudi Arabia and Turkey have supported Pakistan, today Iran's actions are cause for a lot of concern for Pakistan.

The people and governments in Saudi Arabia and Turkey are, however, both very Pro-Pakistan. And Pakistanis have similar sentiments towards these countries. Good economic relations exist as well.

Simplistically:
  • Iran and Pakistan used to be friends (were wealthier than some neighboring countries) then came Islamic revolution in Iran, which it tried to export to Pakistan. Pakistan in order to avoid another E.Pakistan looked the other way, The empty space was taken up by students (Taliban) from Saudi funded madaaris (schools). A civil war of sorts ensued, Suadis won Iranis lost and joined hands with R&AW.
Now Turkey
  • It was a Christian country, Arabs conquered it, Turks became Muslim then corrupted (and weakened) the Muslim empire from within, then the UK took advantage, and took over the Middle East. Now Turkey is in NATO, has been trying to get in to EU forever without success, blames everyone but itself for its failures

Actually it was the Ottoman Turks themselves, after their conversion to Islam, who conquered the remnants of the Christian Byzantine empire whose capital was at Istanbul (Constantinople). Then the Turks founded the longest lasting Islamic Empire, which lasted until their defeat along with their allies Germany in the first world war. The Ottoman Empire, like the German empire was ended by the British, who forced the last Caliph of Turkey to abdicate.

The UK started taking over the middle east only because the Ottoman Empire was in a weakened state at the time. Plus the Britishers purchased the loyalty of many local chiefs, for example, they won over the Al-Saud clan who then revolted against the Caliph and captured Arabia.

It was Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who took over as ruler of Turkey after the abdication of the last Caliph, who banned most Islamic practices, was anti-Islam in general, and turned Turkey into a society where wine and prostitution and all sorts of immoral western practices were adopted and forced on the people in order to become a country that was acceptable to the west.

I am probably one of the most pro Iran memebers here. On the other hand one of the most critical of KSA on PDF. However, Pakistan comes first. It's all about interest of te state. If KSA gave the right figure ~ saying anything above $50 billion I would support Pakistan Army being sent to fight in Yemen. Without any hesitation.

This is what richest countries do all the time. Chase dollars or their interests. Look at Afghanistan. It';s a American war. But look at the countries who have troops there. Turkey, even Singapore !

Those 50 billion $ would cost pakistan 300 $ in losses garantee. Not to mention yamen war is illegal and immoral.

Also our prime minister and chief of army staff have promised all the world and pakistani people that pakistan will never fight anyone else's war ever again. Unless hijaz is under threat pakistan will never send troops anywhere.

Looks like IK has taken these economy, finance, investments, exports, public welfare, good governance etc. stuffs way too seriously!!!! For 99% of the leaders in the Muslim countries it's the leap service!!! And, he has put all of the Pak's friends in a competition like the rich obsessive compulsive gamblers gathering around the poker table.....

Once he is finished with Asia, I am pretty sure he'll move into the West - his favorite playing ground!!!! Only GOD knows what he's aiming for there!!!!!! The last time it was no less than the Oxford Blues, Royals, Goldsmiths etc.....

If a leader can solve the Afgan riddle sitting in his humble office (with not enough room for the guests to sit comfortably) while proudly showing off his pair of Pesheveri shoes, you need to be mindful of him!!!! A gentleman is known by the shoe he wears.....

Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look,
He thinks too much; such men are dangerous.

investment is great news but sending pakistan army anywhere is another thing.we must not make iran our enemy.iran should also care about it's relations with pakistan.pakistan don't like close iran india relation.iran india relations and recent chabahar day, this will not serve any purpose.also pakistan should also care about china who already invested billions in pakistan.saudi investment is great but we must not allow anyone to hijack this project because this project matters for china.investment means profit in the upcoming years and cpec will generate profit for china.we should urge saudis to stay away from cpec.growing interference of saudia in cpec will not please china.

Expected KSA investment is nearly $7 billion and will be invested in next two years, while $3 billion loan (already deposited in SBP) and $3 billion oil deferred payments are scheduled for one year. So, a total of $13 billion package - of which $6 billion package already given.

ISLAMABAD —

Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, is set to make his first state visit to Pakistan on Saturday, where he is expected to announce investment projects worth up to $20 billion, a senior official told VOA.

The unprecedented Saudi investment is being viewed by Prime Minister Imran Khan’s nascent government as a major boost for cash-strapped Pakistan, which is facing an economic crisis and balance of payments pressure.

It will also send a strong message to other international investors to come to Pakistan, said Haroon Sharif, who chairs Pakistan’s Board of Investment, (BoI) which promotes and facilitates investors.

“At this stage, we are expecting serious Memorandums of Understanding [for concrete projects] between $15 billion to $20 billion worth of investments from Saudi Arabia in the area of oil refining, petrochemicals, energy sector, alternate energy and the mineral sector,” Sharif told VOA. However, these number are subject to technical feasibilities, he emphasized.

The Saudi prince, often referred to as MBS, will be accompanied by a high-powered delegation, including members of the royal family, key ministers and leading businessmen. He will hold meetings with Prime Minister Khan and other top officials, as well as Pakistani military leaders.

Sharif said that the anticipated Saudi investment includes an oil refinery to be established in the southwestern coastal city of Gwadar, where China has built a seaport as part of its global Belt and Road Initiative. The proposed refinery is estimated to cost around $10 billion.

Officials say the refinery will be in place “in 3-5 years” and it will help meet Pakistan’s needs of refined oil products, which it currently imports. The surplus, they say, will be exported from Gwadar to other buyers.

Saudi investment also intends to target food and agriculture sectors in Pakistan.

Strong ties

Pakistan has traditionally maintained strong political, cultural, economic and defense ties with Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Kingdom hosts hundreds of thousands of Pakistani expatriates, and is a key source of oil supplies to Islamabad on deferred payments and cash grants to help Pakistan’s traditionally struggling economy.

Pakistani officials insist the Saudi intended investment has no strings attached to it such as asking Pakistan to send its troops to assist in Saudi war in Yemen.

In October, Riyadh said it would lend Pakistan $3 billion in cash and allow Islamabad to defer payments for oil imports worth $3 billion for a one-year period to support the country’s ailing economy. The money has already been deposited to the State Bank of Pakistan.

A Pakistani official said Prime Minister Khan has developed a “special relationship and friendship” with MBS and the two leaders have vowed to further deepen ties between the two countries.

Khan was among a few international leaders who participated in an investment conference Saudi Arabia hosted in October. The event was organized just days after the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. Many foreign participants boycotted the conference to protest Khashoggi’s killing.

The United Arab Emirates, a staunch Saudi ally, has recently also offered a $6 billion package to Pakistan. Sharif noted that the UAE has also nearly finalized plans to establish an oil refinery in Pakistan with an anticipated production capacity of about 300,000 barrels. That project would require about $8 billion in investments, he added.

Chinese investment
International monitors don't consider security a major barrier in the way of investment in Pakistan, noted Sharif.

“People have removed the security lens and have begun to look at Pakistan from an economic diplomacy lens," he said. "This is a major shift because for the past five years only China was looking at Pakistan through the economic diplomacy lens."

Pakistan’s partnership in the U.S.-led “war on terror” after 9/11 attacks triggered a militant backlash in the South Asian nation, killing tens of thousands of people and causing losses to the tune of more than 100 billion dollars to national economy, according to official estimates.

Until now, neighboring China, a close ally of Islamabad, was the only country to invest in Pakistan, with around 20 billion dollars in energy as well as infrastructure projects over the past five years.

And in return, what we must do?

There is no free lunch

Remember we wont fight iran
Will india fight iran...
seems investment in india is bigger than Pakistan

Can anyone explains the relations between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia , Iran and Turkey? What's really going on between them?
Historically islam has had two sects
1. "Sunni "led by arabs though widely adopted by non arabs represents 90% of islam, almost 100% in africa.

2. "Shia " by persians, iraq parts of syria and Pakistan india

This fight is now become not only fight of religion but also arab-persian civilization ..
-----
Turkey represent more a clash of civilization .....

historically turks ruled all the arabs this became reignited issue when qatar joined turkey to push for more reforms in arab world..iran to some extent also want reforms in arab world to throw off the monarchs of arab world..as some countries like bahrain will benefit from this (sunni monarch shia majority ) and saudi boarder region

The divide in sunni-shia is simply not fixable as we have an extremist iran in the picture and to some extent an extremist saud
