What's new

Saudi broadcaster MBC takes all of its Turkish TV programmes off the air

I heard Turkish dramas are a bit westernized. No surprising it is not well received in the Arab World.

its very well recieved the ladies love it .. the removal is just because it is turkish.. :)

beside that any drama has no real value they may use indian series as uae now began to build some religious places it would be a good little step for SA to use indian drama series..

Which means people are gonna watch those from YT or Turkish channels, good.

Their controversially liberal take on relationships also resulted in 2008’s Noor becoming a runaway hit in the region. The show’s final episode, airing on MBC, reportedly had 80 million viewers from the Arabian Gulf to Morocco.
Well, the show had more viewers in Arab world than Turkey itself.

Good for Turkey, if Turkish dramas are popular in the Arab world.

I assume there are some cultural similarities between Levantine Arabs and Turks.

Correct me if I am wrong.

I'd say with the border regions, the culture in Istanbul is way different i'd say without having visited Levant.

It isnt about the liberal views bla bla, rising Turkish soft power is concern in whole ME, not only in Saudi Arabia but also Iran.

Then congrats to Turkey, I wish the best for the Turks. :)

The Irony is that... A good part of MBC viewers nowadays... watch that channel because of "Turkish Dramas"...
MBC is not what is was anymore... it's becoming a niche Channel...
Many Arab countries are turning to their "national ones" since the production and rates of series/movies...are becoming enough for local consumption...

As for those...jumping on Turkish dramas being "Westernized or Very sexual"... then it's the typical answer of someone who doesn't watch Arab series...

MBC will change minds when they see the complains pilling up...
IF not... Then it's Turkey side to put ahead an Alternative...

.
Turkish soaps were also very popular in Pakistan.. till Pak tv producers pulled up their socks and started producing better content ... like in the past..

However Turkey does produce noce shows... that soap about Sultan Mehmet ? Etc.

Also watched Turkish movies.. Daag I & 2...
Nice but nothing special.. much like Pak Waar series..

Korean movie industry should be a role model for both Pak n Turkish movie makers.

I was watching Ezel back then, just out of curiosity i watched a part in Arabic edit, there was this one scene where they visit a strip club, that part was completely edited out in Arabic.
The question is what exactly is too liberal when those parts are edited out, that women dont wear Burqa or something?

.
Good job by the Persian Gulf Arabs again... Their women should never see that it's possible for a woman somewhere in the Muslim World to take a decision on her own, to walk around without a male guardian or a burqa on her head. :D

It's Not a question of Burqa or not... since if you watch Arab series... all this so called "forbidden scene" are actually present... Watch a lebanon drama... and then you'll see... even Khaleeji dramas have "forbidden or immoral" scenes...
A bit of Hypocrisy...

Nah not hypocracy, as mentioned, its the concern of Turkish soft power.
A whole tourism industry developed in Turkey because of Arabs visiting the shooting places of those dramas.

And you know what cultural exchange might trigger in the future that those regimes fear, i think Arab Spring would hardly happen if there was no medial influence on the people.

So, much not liked that 80 million viewers saw just the last episode of NOOR drama.

Well ofc the fear of "Turkey indirect influence" is also problematic to them...
But I was mostly making that comment of the "Explicit scenes" of such dramas and their censoring...

As for Turkish soft power, it's indeed working well... It's giving to some part of the arab world a fantasied version of what their country could become, and therefore could trigger admiration toward Turkey.

But for the "Arab spring" part... I'm not entirely sure about that... Dramas that psuh for a different view...will not change a lot... Turkish soap dramas and their westernized vision is not new... that place was already taken by Lebanese soap drama in the past... and they still are an important part of it... And yet it didn't change a lot...

The reason is quite simple... The audience of such "Media" are very centric, even though it has widen with time, but it's still very restricted... it's mostly Housewifes, with a small part of "youngster".
Therefore their influence is limited to the society...

One thing I'm sure... the one who dislike it... is... The Husband...Boyfriend...Lover...

Although I don't watch MBC myself, I wouldn't say it's becoming a niche Channel,
It's probably the only real and high-quality group of channels in the whole region beside Aljazeera/BeinSports
They still offer all the most popular programs such as the Voice, Arab Idol and GotTalent.

I'm glad the Saudi Football Union pulled out the Saudi League from this channel, so I'm not forced any more to see homosexual/gay Turkish drama Ads on the screen while watching a football game.

Yet Arabs are the dirtiest of people...now even Saudis are allowing jazz concerts when men and women mix and bogey. Saudi building a beach resort where Saudi women will be able to go in bikinis. Double standards.
Personally I think orders are from USA
