Saudi Arabia: Woman Driver Verdict Reportedly Overturned By King

RIYADH, Saudi Arab — A Saudi government official says King Abdullah has overturned a court verdict that sentenced a Saudi woman to be lashed 10 times for defying the kingdom's ban on women driving.

The official declined to elaborate. He spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

A day earlier, a Saudi court found Shaima Jastaina guilty of violating the driving ban, and sentenced her to 10 lashes.

It was the first time a legal punishment had been handed down for breaking the longtime ban in the ultraconservative Muslim nation. No laws prohibit women from driving, but conservative religious edicts have banned it.

Earlier this week, King Abdullah announced that women will have the right to vote and run in the country's 2015 local elections.

The media is saying that it was HIM who over turned it based on a twitter tweet by the wife of Al-Waleed bin Talal. But in fact in order for any verdict now in Saudi Arabia to pass it must go though a higher court if it appealed. And the higher court was the one who over turned the verdict.

Interesting to note here however it is that King Abdullah did change the Judiciary to allow appeals and such to happen so he is to be thanked for this. Nasser the only who is brainwashed here is you.
