FRANKFURT/RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has ordered that no more government contracts be awarded to German companies, in a sign of continued irritation over Berlin’s foreign policy in the Middle East, German magazine Der Spiegel reported on Friday.

Citing no sources, it said the move was likely to hit major companies such as Siemens (SIEGn.DE), Bayer (BAYGn.DE) and Boehringer Ingelheim as well as carmaker Daimler (DAIGn.DE).

Relations between Germany and Saudi Arabia have been strained, and Saudi Arabia last year summoned its ambassador in Germany home for consultations over comments by then-Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel about the political crisis in Lebanon.

Saudi Arabia is a significant trade partner for Germany, generating 2017 exports worth 6.6 billion euros ($7.7 billion), according to Germany’s statistics office.

Siemens last year won an order worth around $400 million to deliver five gas turbines for a combined heat and power plant being built in Saudi Arabia. Daimler soon after secured an order for 600 Mercedes‑Benz Citaro buses from Saudi bus operator SAPTCO.

A senior German businessman in Saudi Arabia, who asked to remain anonymous, told Reuters on Friday that especially the healthcare sector was currently feeling added scrutiny when applying for Saudi tenders.

“They have even been asking: Where are the products coming from? Are they made in Germany? Do you have other manufacturing sites? And as soon as this is made in Germany, they have been rejecting any German applications for tender,” the person said.

Bayer, Boehringer and Siemens declined to comment on the report by Spiegel. Daimler said it could not confirm the report and that its business was ongoing.

A Saudi government media office did not immediately reply to request for comment.

Bloomberg News had reported in March that government agencies had been told not to renew some non-essential contracts with German firms.

At the time, it cited sources as saying that Deutsche Bank’s (DBKGn.DE) mandates in the kingdom were among those at risk, including a potential role in Saudi Aramco’s IPO-ARMO.SE initial public offering, which could be the largest share sale ever.

. . .
hope they do it its really ugly how germans treat SA Turkey or else

. .
How do Germans treat Saudis?

if you would live in germany you would know they use them for politics and block weapon sales.. they show them in a bad light.. they really dont miss any opportunity for this..

its not like the smear campaign against turks.. or the hate orgasms against turks.. its much more less

I would shift towards more friendly states like s.korea, Italy, Spain, Britain and Russia + China since the japanese are hypocrites in weapon sales I would only do civilian projects with them (japan do all cooperation with EU and US and their loved ones but not with others)

Germany want to block weapons sales because the Saudis are one of the biggest violators of Human right in the world, which includes executing gays, ban on churches, and the Yemen bombing campaign, tell me, is Germany supposed to show them a good light for that? Switch the shoe on the other foot, what if Germany banned Islam and committed the same sins as the Saudis?

The Saudi use extensive extortion, bribery, kidnaping, threats and many other forms of manipulation and violence to get what they want. Am I suppose to feel pity for them? The Germans condemn Turkey for their role in Syria and campaign against Kurds, that is the only reason you are salty towards them but have it ever occurred to you that Turkey does the same exact thing? Turkey supports groups in Syria that many people and countries consider terrorists. What you have is a bunch of countries acting like children because they can’t agree.

I wish US, France and the UK would also place a complete ban on that regime.

Germany banned Islam

as if these manhunt on islam in germany is not enough.. also you know human rights are not the problem as if supporting nations who give gays no rights or supressing their folk is a matter..

if that would be the case than this would be the reason why eu began to sanction russia!? why do they than support sissi ? human rights had never been a reason not to sell weapons or make money..

all the time I hear "never again" and so on about germans going to war or germans committing masskillings.. this should never again happen they say.. by living there I understood its higly possible that they could go crazy again.. from time to time germans always do what they did all the hundrets of years before..

The Germans condemn Turkey for their role in Syria and campaign against Kurds

germany should stop their filthy mouth.. they activly are in cold war against turkey.. some naive turkish ppl dont realize it..

come on just dont talk bullshit.. what campaign.. ? you know it I know it , the whole world knows it except very very big fools and idiots dont have any clue.. there is no campaign against kurds there is self defence against terrorists like pyd and pkk who are supported by russians, arabs, germans, eu and US.. I dont know why ppl hide between such nonsense phrases..

some nations try to make it a kurds vs turks thing to divide and conquer:
may I ask you something: are you russians making a campeign in chechnya? you guys are suppressing them and killing them.. do you see what I want to compare? you just need some nations like eu and us beginning with support for special groubs and you have your campaign

Turkey supports groups in Syria that many people and countries consider terrorists

everybody support some groubs in syria, russia does also do it they work together with hezbsatan , pkk and other groubs.. the groubs supported by turks are no other than those who were supported by US as if turkey would not do what uncle sam says..

back to saudi arabia.. If they cut such deals with germany its good for them also turkey should shift more to friendly countries..

Not vouching for Saudi's, but I don't see a reason how Israeli's are any better. Germany has no issues selling weapons to the state which defiantly disregards UN resolutions and violates International borders of the neighbouring states.
