Saudi Arabia signs Memorandum of Understanding to establish the world's largest solar project

Impressive... 1.79 cents/ kWhr.
I don't know what's the priorities of Pakistani politicians, appointed on our heads by foreign agencies.

Yes, it's very cheap. Similar to how Saudi Arabian oil is the cheapest to extract in the world if I am not wrong.

Well, I know much less than you. Pakistani elites/military should be accountable for the people in this regard because the potential is there. Not as big as KSA (due to size difference) but certainly enough to become more self-sufficient when it comes to energy.

Sun shine in Pakistan as bright as Saudi Arabia.
Pakistanis pay much higher price /kWhr.
Now what would you call the bunch, who refuse to buy cheap solar energy, instead suffer from lack of energy in form of closed industry and expensive produce.
Any sane and loyal ruler of Pakistan would invite Solar power tenders, on the first of assuming office.
Military is poor soul in Pakistan, actually they are mostly busy in fighting terrorists.

I was referring to solar insolation levels and country size, bro.

Corruption is the mother of all evil. If the leadership does not lead from the front, the whole system collapses and becomes ineffective. Believe me, although corruption in KSA is not as big as other places (as per the corruption index), the problem remains and it must be combated at all times everywhere.

We are Greece levels but the goal should be to catch up with the likes of UAE before thinking about the top 20.

We are 57. Shockingly Italy is 54. Not so shockingly actually but it tells you a lot. Denmark 2, lol. It's truth. You won't ever bribe anybody. Forget about it. I already tried and I pay well.

I got it.. but we have quite a huge land and if our govt. is clever they would liberalize investment policy.
Equal incentives for investors in solar power, irrespective of investment volume.
Only the roof tops would generate enough energy that Pakistan would become an energy surplus country overnight.

Definitely. The potential is there.

One of the many reasons why I am a fan of MbS is his economic policy and liberalization policies. He is challenging the current welfare model that is not realistic long-term (in its current form at least).

Are there any private firms or investors who pursue this policy regardless of official government policy in Pakistan? Are private individuals installing solar panels on their own?

I know some investors from Germany, who tried to meet the AEDB officials in Pakistan, they came all the way from Germany but they were quietly told to leave.
Basically, energy self sufficiency hurt many businesses run by the politicians and one of them is import of portable generators, import business also helps to turn black money into white and this is why Pakistani politicians prefer to shut down local industry and increase imports as much as possible.

KSA is a huge country dear. 12th largest in the world and to put it into perspective, most of Western Europe. A gigantic country like Russia is "only" 6.5 times larger.

So it depends on the region. Only a few regions of KSA and areas have what we would call summer temperatures year around (don't forget the big temperature swings between day and night, common for mostly arid climates). Makkah for example.

Large parts of KSA (in particular Northern and the mountainous regions of Hijaz as a whole, in particular the Tabuk region and even Southern mountainous areas) receive regular snowfall during winter and some of the coldest temperatures in Western Asia have actually been measured in KSA.

Floods in the South and Hijaz occurred this summer. The weather is behaving strangely.

I live in eastern region. It gets really hot from June-August season with high humidity.
Feb-June, sun is out (not hot temperature)which is grear for solar energy the kingdom will try to produce.

Middle East is literally the best place for this.

Those are some great pictures you posted. I have lived here for so long but not once this was know to us. I know Taif has snowfalls every year. Makkah and Medina get rainfalls too.If I am not wrong,Abha is also cold.

I am glad Crown Prince has take an initiative to promote toursim in the kingdom. Those islands where NEOM will start looks stunning. Very Maldives and Bahamas feels there.

Yes, coastal Eastern Province alongside Jeddah and Jazan (the city) tend to be the most humid areas in KSA which otherwise is far from being a humid country (to put it mildly).

The climate of the coastal Eastern Province is similar to that of coastal Iran across the pond and Southern Iraq. However not as hot as in those areas of Iraq and Iran. Or Kuwait for that matter.

My pleasure.

There are literally 1000's of photos of KSA in this thread below. Warmly recommended.

Yes, indeed. It's a great initiative as KSA has tremendous potential for tourism. See those two threads below.

Speaking about the marine wonderland of KSA, I recommend visiting this thread below.

OMAS, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Saudi Arabian conglomerate Zahid Group, has acquired a 50 per cent share in Greencells Group, a German provider for solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants

Andreas Hoffmann, CEO of Greencells, commented, “With a solid financial base, we can further strengthen our global footprint, serving more customers with our hallmarks of flexible, modular services, a high-quality product and lean operations to respond quickly in a competitive market.

In close collaboration with our new partner Zahid Group and OMAS, we will continue in our mission to make utility-scale solar the world’s cheapest and most scalable power source.”

Solar energy is the ideal complement to our conventional power solutions. We have been actively seeking companies to partner with that would fulfil our bold ambitions in the renewables sector, which will be the key future growth driver for power globally,” said Majid T Zahid, group president (Energy) at Zahid Group.“Solar energy is the ideal complement to our conventional power solutions. “We look forward to jointly realising growth and success in this burgeoning industry,” he further added.

Greencells develops utility-scale solar projects globally. The company builds more than 1.3 GW of capacity in more than 100 individual projects in 25 countries.

It has built a substantial presence expanding into the US, Asia Pacific and the Middle East including the supply of the mounting system and construction services for the world’s largest solar power plant, the 1.2 GW Sweihan project in Abu Dhabi, which is currently under construction.
