Yemen crisis: Saudi Arabia 'shoots down' Scud missile
Yemen crisis: Saudi Arabia 'shoots down' Scud missile - BBC News

Saudi Arabia has shot down a Scud missile fired from across the border by Yemen's Houthi rebels and its allies, the state Saudi Press Agency says.

It was intercepted by a Patriot missile battery near the south-western city of Khamis Mushait in the morning.

On Friday, four Saudi soldiers and many Yemeni rebels died in fighting on the border, the Saudi-led coalition says.

It says forces loyal to Yemen's former president, backed by the Houthis, attacked several Saudi positions.

In a separate development, the Houthis have agreed to attend peace talks in Geneva.

The UN-brokered meeting on 14 June in Switzerland is aimed at ending weeks of war that has claimed more than 2,000 lives.

"We accepted the invitation of the United Nations to go to the negotiating table in Geneva without preconditions," Daifallah al-Shami, a senior member of the rebels' political wing told AFP.

Yemen's government, which is operating from Riyadh, also said it would attend.

Ground attack
A Saudi-led coalition has been bombing rebel positions in Yemen for 10 weeks, in support of the country's exiled president Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.

The Houthis overran the capital Sanaa last September and have gone on to seize most of the country.

Although there have been previous border skirmishes and deadly rebel fire against Saudi Arabia, Friday's battle is only the second major ground attack reported against Saudi territory.

The rebels "aimed to penetrate our borders", and were eventually repelled, the Saudi statement added.

The humanitarian crisis in Yemen has been described as "catastrophic" by the UN with 20 million civilians - 80% of the population - in need of aid.

At least 21 people have died during violence since Thursday in the Aden area, while there were intense coalition air raids against Daleh and Shabwa provinces.

This is crazy...How come these people are getting so sophisticated missles...SCUD missle is out of reach for even normal countries....

Yemen had a stockpile of Scuds. The Communist Afghanis also fired dozens of Scuds into Pakistan during the war.

Scud is not sophisticated at all, it's only slightly more potent than the WW2 V2. It's a single-stage, unitary-warhead missile that is liquid fueled, thus complicating its operational time - since it can't be stored while fueled. They can't maneuver, they can't evade, they don't carry decoys, they go up and they come down.

Stocks of Scuds are relatively common in the middle-east, it proliferated quite a bit:

Scud

Fortunately, and as the KSA found out, it's a rather predictable missile (assuming you don't alter it's warhead to increase range like Iraq did - that, as the US found out with the Al-Hussein missile, creates an unstable flight-path). It travels in a ballistic arc, these are very, very easy to calculate for anti-missile defenses like PAC-3:

Yemen has plenty, left over from it's last civil war in 1994:

After bombing Yemeni cities like maniacs in past week, it's now proved that they are just doing the blind bombing and destroying infrastructures and killing civilians, as hundreds of photos prove. I hope there are more scuds in their stash, as per latest Tweets, Saudis are now in a panic mode, fearing there are a much larger number of scuds hidden somewhere. It might help to stop this war on Yemen, Saudis have shown to be too coward to launch a ground attack, they are just killing people from the sky with zero results. They just don't stop the bombing because they want to save face.

Saudi air defense intercept a Scud missile

" The RSADF has its headquarters in Riyadh, there is also here an elaborate underground command facility that co-ordinates Saudi Arabia's advanced "Peace Shield" radar and air defence system - reputed to be the most advanced radar network in the world."

The Operation is against a rebel group associated with your sect , does not mean that whole KSA Army is coward to act ..
by your logic, all we hear from Iran is Statements to do this and that to Israel .. but nothing so far ...
you are Senior member so act like one ..

-"Proved" by who?

-"As per latest tweets" you deserve a Pulitzer prize for journalism.

-So let me get this straight, you're saying that:

"Not launching a ground attack in any given conflict, is equal to cowardice" or"If you don't fight on my terms, you're a coward."

Reminds me of this scene from the Holy Grail lol:

You guys are yet to prove one single Iranian weapon in Houthi hands. It's good that you mentioned sects, which proves exactly that this is a sectarian war started by Saudis. And yes they are cowards, they have been launching aerial bombardments against poor Yemenis, 2500-3000 civilians have already been killed by Saudis (hundreds of pictures of dead bodies, babies, women, many burnt to the point of being unrecognizable) and yet, not even one single objective was achieved.

No, it's not like that, Saudi army is coward because for achieving its objective, it MUST deploy ground troops, as we have seen in past 3 months, airstrikes didn't get you anything except more and more dead civilians and destruction of infrastructures, so when you can't achieve your objectives by air raids and you refuse to send your soldiers to fight on the ground (after you begged other countries to put their own soldiers on risk for ground invasion), it doesn't mean anything but cowardliness. You are just wasting your expensive bombs on Yemenis without knowing where you are going, and what you want to achieve.

You can go on with the chest thumping, it doesn't change the reality.

as a so said "senior member" something should be avoided , words like yours
"group associated with your sect"

i don't see you anyway criticize why a country like KSA is deciding for itself to act against people of another country
i don't see you criticize all the innocent people killed there (see US newspapers and you can easily see it)

but instead of such attitude, you prefer to criticize someone who criticizes your master . too bad.

You don't get to dictate our strategies of War. And meaningless terms like "Bravery" or Cowardice" has no place in modern warfare. It's all about using the right tools at the right time.

We can all play this stupid game.

U.S downed an Iranian Airliner which killed hundreds of Iranians. Iran didn't respond militarily. So I judge them, regardless of any other consideration, to be spineless, flimsy cowards.

Okay?

Okay?

Your example sucks my friend. There are many differences between your example and that of Yemen:

Iran had not attacked U.S to start a war to achieve some objectives(like Saudis did in Yemen).

Iran was at the end of an 8 year long war, we barely had even operational aircraft, let alone other equipment, we couldn't afford a war with U.S (unlike Saudis with super expensive US made equipment against Yemenis with AK-47s).

Iran answered U.S help to Saddam against Iran later in post 2003 Iraq, just read some comments of American commanders about how Iran was responsible for most of U.S casualties in Iraq.

ok , so you are from the Land where all angels live ? all ME is crying over Iran involvement in ME conflicts ..
your Regime supporting the Iraqi PM to suppress the Sunni , by which we get the Product of ISIS ..you accept it or not , whatever your Point of View is Based on your own sect ... and you know that ... you eternal hate towards KSA and their Hate towards Iran is based on Sect , so lets not pretend to be angel or Farishta , ...ok ?

now if i say why Iranians are sending its General to Fight against other forces so ? KSA has all the right to defend its borders .. if they are capable of , along with their Interest ... having a Stable Sunni Yemen is in their Favor , Iran is doing same in region , even in Pakistan this Sect BS wars has been Fought , Clash between Shia and Sunni in Pakistan is widely funded by Saud's and your Aytuallaha's

So you had a lot of FACTORS to take into CONSIDERATION, which dictated your ACTIONS that best SERVES you in that SPECIFIC situation. Which, again, has nothing to do with being a "COWARD" or something else. It's a all about strategy.

You allow yourselves (Iranians) in that example, to explain the whole situation in a PRAGMATIC, SMART, and SELF SERVING manner. Therefor, you must allow EVERYONE else to think and talk from that same PERSPECTIVE.

Do you understand me now? I AM NOT saying Iranians are COWARDS for not responding. I'm saying that complex political and military situations should not be explained with EMOTIONAL TERMS like you did in your first post.

My example was just to illustrate that your logic simply does NOT work.

To be more clear, if my country had done exactly what Saudis have done and even if I supported it, I'd find it cowardice of our army too, because when you invade a nation and keep bombing people to oblivion without achieving any of your goals, it means you are desperate and a coward.

So, you'd accept what any country does based on their interests? So, when a terror group called Jaish al-Adl launches attacks from your side of border, isn't it our right ro bomb them inside Pakistan? Would you, as a Pakistani, accept that? Of course not, because it doesn't fit your agenda. Houthis never threatened Saudis, never launched any attacks, it was all an internal Yemeni conflict, but Saudis decided to poke their nose in to Yemen, killing thousands of civilians, and you are defending that, which is pathetic.

Another example/question: Back in 90s, when Pakistan was supporting Taliban, were't we justified to launch an attack against Pakistani supported groups? Would you support that too? No you wouldn't, because it's against your 'sect' or interests.Considering Taliban are the real scums on earth and have nothing in common with Houthis. So while you don't know it, you are making judgement based on sects yourself, and at the same time, complaining about sectarian conflicts.

And btw, no one is an angel, I never claimed that.
