Saudi Arabia on Monday sentenced five people to death and three more to jail terms totalling 24 years over the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul in October last year.

Saudi Deputy Public Prosecutor and spokesman Shalaan al Shalaan, reading out the verdict in the trial, said the court dismissed charges against the remaining three of the 11 people that had been on trial, finding them not guilty. A top aid of the crown prince believed by many to be involved in the planning of the murder was investigated but not charged.

Khashoggi was a US resident and critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS), the kingdom's de facto ruler.

He was last seen at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018, where he had gone to receive papers ahead of his wedding. His body was reportedly dismembered and removed from the building, and his remains have not been found.

The killing caused a global uproar, tarnishing the crown prince's image.

The CIA and some Western governments have said they believe Prince Mohammed ordered the killing, but Saudi officials say he had no role. Eleven Saudi suspects were put on trial over his death in secretive proceedings in Riyadh.

In the investigation into the murder, 21 were arrested and 10 were called in for questioning without arrest, Shalaan said.

Riyadh's criminal court pronounced the death penalty on five individuals, whose names have not yet been released, "for committing and directly participating in the murder of the victim".

The three sentenced to prison were given various sentences totalling 24 years "for their role in covering up this crime and violating the law".

Shalaan added that the investigations proved there was no "prior enmity" between those convicted and Khashoggi.

The verdicts can still be appealed.

Last November the Saudi prosecutor said that Saud al Qahtani, a former high-profile Saudi royal adviser, had discussed Khashoggi's activities before he entered the Saudi consulate with the team which went on to kill him.

The prosecutor said Qahtani acted in coordination with deputy intelligence chief Ahmed al Asiri, who he said had ordered Khashoggi’s repatriation from Turkey and that the lead negotiator on the ground then decided to kill him.

Both men were dismissed from their positions but while Asiri went on trial, Qahtani did not.

On Monday, Shalaan said Asiri has been released due to insufficient evidence, and Qahtani had been investigated but was not charged and had been released.

Saudi Deputy Public Prosecutor and spokesman Shalaan al-Shalaan, reading out the trial verdict, said the court dismissed charges against the remaining three of the 11 people that had been on trial, finding them not guilty. None of the defendants’ names was immediately released.

“The investigation showed that the killing was not premeditated ... The decision was taken at the spur of the moment,” Shalaan said, a position contradicting the findings of a United Nations-led investigation.

Khashoggi was a U.S. resident and critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom’s de facto ruler. He was last seen at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, 2018, where he had gone to obtain documents for his impending wedding. His body was reportedly dismembered and removed from the building, and his remains have not been found.

Khashoggi’s murder caused a global uproar, tarnishing the crown prince’s image. The CIA and some Western governments have said they believe Prince Mohammed ordered the killing, but Saudi officials say he had no role. Eleven Saudi suspects were put on trial over his death in secretive proceedings in Riyadh.

Agnes Callamard, the U.N. special rapporteur for extrajudicial summary or arbitrary executions, on Monday criticized the trial verdict as a “mockery” of justice.

“The hit-men are guilty, sentenced to death. The masterminds not only walk free, they have barely been touched by the investigation and the trial,” she said on Twitter.

The U.N.-led inquiry reported in February that the evidence pointed to “a brutal and premeditated killing, planned and perpetrated” by Saudi officials.

TWO SENIOR FIGURES FREED AFTER PROBE
Last November the Saudi prosecutor said that Saud al-Qahtani, a former high-profile Saudi royal adviser, had discussed Khashoggi’s activities before he entered the Saudi consulate with the team which went on to kill him.

The prosecutor had said Qahtani acted in coordination with deputy intelligence chief Ahmed al-Asiri, who he said had ordered Khashoggi’s repatriation from Turkey and that the lead negotiator on the ground then decided to kill him.

Both men were dismissed from their positions but while Asiri was tried, Qahtani was not.

On Monday Shalaan said Asiri has been tried and released due to insufficient evidence, and Qahtani had been investigated but was not charged and had been released.

Shalaan also said the Saudi consul-general to Turkey at the time, Mohammed al-Otaibi, had been freed after Turkish witnesses said Otaibi had been with them on the day of the crime. Two weeks ago, the United States barred Otaibi from entering the country.

Sources familiar with the matter told Reuters last year that Maher Mutreb, the lead negotiator, and Salah al-Tubaigy, a forensic expert specializing in autopsies, were also on trial for the murder and could face the death penalty.

On Monday Shalaan said that when the Saudi team that entered the consulate saw that it would not be possible to transfer Khashoggi to a safe place to continue negotiating, they decided to kill him.

“It was agreed, in consultation between the head of the negotiating team and the culprits, to kill Jamal Khashoggi inside the consulate,” Shalaan said in response to questions from journalists.

31 PEOPLE INVESTIGATED
Callamard, the U.N. rapporteur, criticized the trial for having been held behind closed doors, saying that the conditions in international law for doing so had not been met.

Human rights group Amnesty International also criticized the closed trial, branding the verdict a “whitewash”.

“The verdict fails to address the Saudi authorities’ involvement in this devastating crime or clarify the location of Jamal Khashoggi’s remains,” Amnesty said in a statement.

In the murder investigation, 21 people were arrested and 10 called in for questioning without arrest, according to Shalaan.

Riyadh’s criminal court pronounced the death penalty on five defendants “for committing and directly participating in the murder of the victim”. The three sentenced to prison were given various sentences totaling 24 years “for their role in covering up this crime and violating the law”.

Shalaan added the investigations proved there was no “prior enmity” between those convicted and Khashoggi.

The verdicts can still be appealed.

Was the crown prince one of them?

If not no need to publish vomit from Saudi

Execute orders and get executed by those who gave the orders, i would be pissed if i was one of MBS's assasins.

What would be the point of executing a relatively harmless but very well-known individual/activist (would not even call him that as he was always an outspoken patriot) that was even based in the US (US residency while writing for arguably the most famous American newspaper) when there are 100's of much harsher critics outside of KSA (many based in the West) who have never been hurt and who daily upload Youtube videos while being based in London, Paris etc., having a much larger following than Khashoggi ever could dream of?

Not even Russia are this bold when they are liquidating critics of Russia/Putin to kill Russian US residents.

As a Turk you should know the negative publicity jailing/killing journalists and regime critics gives seeing that you until very recently jailed the most journalists in the world and have a history of killing regime critics.

Clearly a botched operation when the intend was probably to take Khashoggi back home to KSA for questioning or prevent him from writing on Washington Post. Killing him seems outrageous and I highly doubt that an otherwise shrewd/successful MBS cabinet would do such a thing. Or King Salman for that matter.

Killing political opponents/enemies of the state abroad is not something that KSA has engaged in ever hence the international outcry. Had it been Russia that would not have come as a surprise given their track record.

I highly doubt that those executions will ever be carried out.

Khashoggi was not some innocent lamb and some kind of poster boy for Western democracy. A former close ally of the state, escaping to the US while propagandizing for the MB (a banned terrorist organization in most of the Arab world) and speaking with two different tongues in English (Washington Post) and another to the Arab public.

In any case while the Khashoggi case was a foreign policy own goal for a while, it has been largely forgotten and not had any impact economically, politically etc. (as much as Erdogan and his state controlled media had wished to after milking the case for weeks in a row and coming up with imaginary claims of him being cut up alive, lol, while eventually not being able to prove such claims, surprise, surprise) on the contrary, KSA's economy (in particular the booming non-oil/gas sector), infrastructural projects, reforms (rapid pace and very successful so far), opening up, tourism boom, successfully held major international events such as international golf and tennis tournaments, heavyweight title fight with Joshua and Ruiz, Dakar Rally next month, Italian and Spanish Super Cups etc.

2 trillion USD Saudi Aramco IPO (by far largest in history meeting the expectation contrary to constant Western propaganda prior of saying this would be impossible) etc.

Things are looking good and KSA is in a very interesting, dynamic and changing period that has so far been a success with much more to come to the great frustration of its ill-wishers.

They are given huge compensation package. Their families members will be taken care for rest of their life.

It's a trade off kind of. If not why would they even peacefully accept such verdict?

In some regimes and cultures human life is worth very little so don’t be surprised that for some it is normal when people are executed in a show trials that are used by someone to wash his dirty hands.

When the relatives of the executed get a good compensation to keep their mouths shut and full everyone will be happy, can you imagine.

Stfu with your bullshit already, focus on the Kurds and Greek animals instead

If it was a show the execution won't even have to take place, they don't need to do it in public. No one would know anything. All humans have emotions and care if their relative is killed.
