Not sure if any one has suggested the following, but I would like to put these options out there
Hopefully Pakistan can try to get the following deal put in to get the most benefits out of a deal like this with Saudi Arabia or other Gulf Arab countries

1. Arms for Oil: similar to the Al-Yamamah Deal with Britain: Supplying the Saudis with 5 or 6 Squadrons of JF-17 in exchange for a fixed number of barrels of oil a day (such as 100,000-150,000/day) for 10-20 years could do the most benefit for Pakistan
2. If the Saudi's want to equip their jets with the EF-200 engine; they should tell the Europeans to allow Pakistan to also be allowed to buy that engine and equip its jets (this could be a game changer for the JF-17; Higher thrust, more reliable engine, supercruise, lighter and smaller, etc)
3. Saudis could also fund the development of a stealthier JF-17 (design improvements; more composite materials, full Quadruple FBW, etc) as well as european avionics, EW/ECCM subsystems and Munitions already in the Saudi arsenal which Pakistan may want to procure.

Best way to get European Tech (especially the engine and electronics) into the JF-17 and have access to a truly modern 4+ generation plane; Pakistan could also get a guaranteed supply of oil for the next 10 to 20 years. It would also lay the technological ground work for the subsystems for the possible PAF J-31.
It would only cost Pakistan perhaps $5 billion over the next 5 years to supply these jets and possibly another 5 Billion over the next 10 to 15 years to service the jets (a heavy price but for a big pay off) Pakistan may be even able to get china to do the upgrades on their own dime if they knew this was a big way for them to get in with the Gulf Arab countries in big ticket defense deals and not just small sales

The oil deal is not a workable solution. PAF needs hard cash, it will not let even the government have a sniff of it.

Don't be so pessimistic. ksa needs a reliable source of advanced weapons platforms that won't be susceptible to embargoes and sanctions which have become a very stark reality for them after the 911 lawsuit bill was passed in washington and especially now that trump is about to take office.

Please don't confuse realism with pessimism. The possibility of Saudi's buying Thunder is zero. This talk is just typical Saudi habit of talking a lot but offering nothing substantive. Trump or no Trump KSA along with Israel is lynchpin of American alliance in Middle East.

35 years ago General Zia said 'peanuts' with referance to US aid to Pakistan. That can also be applied to the KSA in referance to Pakistan.

Currently Saudi Arabia is short on cash and has oil to spare (as I referenced the Al-Yamamah deal with Britian); Pakistan as a whole needs a steady supply of oil to keep its industries and power generation going. If the Pakistani government bought the jets from PAC/PAF and sold them onwards to Saudis or the Qataris in exchange for Oil; it could net more profit for the nation as a whole.

Costs of operating their twin engine European or American Aircraft are high
The JF-17 is seen as a potentially cheaper alternative; and its stated mission would as a workhouse; CAP over Yemen or patrolling along the borders

An alternative I don't know the Saudis have considered; if a Cheap modern fighter is all they need; is buying used/surplus F-16s from friendly Air Forces about to retire them; especially countries like Jordan; which could also send their pilots to fly missions
