Saudi Arabia launched on Monday two satellites into space.

The Shahin Sat 17, affiliated with King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), and CubeSate Satellite, affiliated with King Saud University (KSU), were launched from the Baikonur Base in Kazakhstan on board a Russian Soyuz 2 Rocket that has already reached its orbit, reported the Saudi Press Agency.

The Shahin Sat 17 is a new generation small size satellite and will be used for marine tracking purposes. The CubeSat Satellite is the first satellite to be launched by a Saudi university and aims at preparing and training engineering students in satellite design and programming.

President of KSU Dr. Badran bin Abdulrahman Al-Omar praised the successful launch, extending his gratitude to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, for supporting innovation and scientific research.

CubeSat will take images of space, the Earth and the moon and send them to the ground station at the university, he told SPA.

The satellite, which weighs one kilogram, was designed and manufactured by about 130 students from the College of Engineering at the university.

KSU plans on launching a larger version of the satellite, Al-Omar revealed.

this is a cubesat usually used by amateurs and university students. It’s being launched by foreigners

It’s the same as building a gaming PC and then having the Russians launch it

This one is Indeed admirable unlike what UAE did. First step should be mastering the earth, its atmosphere and other earth related fields. Even if the launcher doesn't belong to you, even if its a small cubesat, it still is thousands of times better than studying Mars lol.

UAE and KSA have brought a large number of international academics to their country in recent years. They have long been investing heavily in improving the education system. And study abroad scholarships are more advanced than most countries in the world. Also, many important industrial initiatives and JV installations took place in recent years. These studies are supported by a very serious financial power and international lobbying activities. In the current situation, system engineering and final product focusing are rapidly coming to the fore. Because they are not subject to any international obstruction or embargo activity in subsystem procurement and human resource. This allows these industries to develop in a deductive way.

Another typical example of this is that a 3-year-old defense company in UAE has succeeded in creating a mid-to-long-range ASM missile. Actually, what stands out here is system engineering and the integration of the final product in UAE facilities. If the UAE were a country that had problems accessing some critical components, they would need a more closed industrial model and therefore much longer efforts. This is basically an industrial model that has the potential to develop much faster than the "do-it-yourself and learn with reverse enginering" model. If the ultimate goal is to specialized on mentioned industrial areas in a long-term...
