Oil Cargos for which country? China?
Isnt it tremendously more expensive to transport liquids (especially such high volumes) over land than sea? Perhaps this will cater the areas of china bordering central asia? But you would think those areas would have access to Russian and Central Asian oil already.
So seems more strategic than practical.

Anyways, Ill let the Chinese or Pakistani members explain the significance of this before I comment further.

Normally it is significantly cheaper to trade massive amounts over sea. However in this case CPEC significantly shortens the route as compared to the sea route from the Persian Gulf to Eastern China. Even if that difference doesn't make it cheaper then still CPEC is important for China to have an alternate route in case of a blockade. China isn't stupid...they wouldn't have invested billions just to build a more expensive/useless trade route.

Yes but just bcuz it's a strategic asset meant as a backup in case of a blockade doesn't mean it can't be turned into a profitable venture. CPEC won't just sit there unused during peacetime while China still trades through sea routes. Instead they will most likely(along with Pak and KSA now too) try to turn it into a manufacturing/trade hub...afterall they have all invested quite a lot on it for it to just sit there idly. Gawadar sits by the Persian Gulf(one of the busiest parts of the ocean for sea trade) and it connects to China(one of the largest manufacturers)...it seems impossible for this route to be unprofitable and sit idly by, unused.

Italy's economy has been in somewhat of a decline and this opportunity could rejuvenate it. With Britain's exit from the EU, it has sort of set a precedent that if EU and it's regulations aren't working for a country, that country can set its own course. So Italy doesn't necessarily have to cave in to EU's pressure. Turkey is right next door to Italy too...and with China eyeing the Mediterranean ports/routes, it would be a no brainer for Turkey to join in.

This initiative is barely starting out...once the trade starts in full swing along CPEC/OBOR...a lot of countries would be willing to join.

If they blockade Gwadar they will also be blocking Iran. It will adversely effect Chinese trade as well.


US probably doesn't have the balls to take on two/three nuclear armed countries at once (we all know Iran has nukes hidden away).
