Saudi Arabia Cuts Ties With Iran

.
Saudi Arabia will suspend all air traffic with Iran, Reuters reports citing Saudi Foreign Minister. The minister also said that all commercial ties between the two countries will be cut.

However, Iranian pilgrims will still be welcome to visit Saudi Arabia, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told Reuters.

On Saturday, demonstrators in Iran protesting the execution of a prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr by Riyadh, attacked the Saudi embassy in capital Tehran and the consulate in the city of Mashhad.

In the wake of the attacks, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Sudan announced the cutting of diplomatic ties with Iran. Earlier on Monday, the United Arab Emirates announced that it was reducing the number of Iranian diplomats in Abu Dhabi and downgrading the diplomatic ties with Tehran.

Saudi Arabia announced Saturday it had executed 47 men on terrorism charges, including al-Nimr, an outspoken critic of Riyadh authorities, and several alleged al-Qaeda members.

For decades everyone has known that when an embassy is assaulted in Tehran that means the ayatollahs are behind it. And when this sort of thing happens, cutting ties is the expected response.

The questions are, why would the ayatollahs want to do this, and why now?

No, that's not the issue. The ayatollahs ordered the assault on the Saudis knowing that breaking of relations would be the result, just as they ordered "students" to assault the U.S. embassy in 1979, knowing that doing so would worsen relations between the two countries. Worsening of relations was the desired result then and it's the desired result now.

As if Iran would care!

Iran has survived and even flourished during the worst period of global sanctions led by US...Iran is a very strong on ethics, culture, self reliance and self pride..they don't need countries like Saudis which is nothing but a puppet of westerns states and earns its bread, drugs and cars through only one source i.e. oil!

Yes, Iran is such a superpower that they are behind KSA on almost every front be it overall state economy, the wealth of its citizens, military, security, HDI, happiness etc. if we are to trust objective international data and economic data. There is really no comparison.

If you knew anything about the Middle East you would know that Iran is much more dependent on the GCC than vice versa. GCC is hosting the largest Iranian diaspora in the world and Iran's largest trading partner is the UAE. In return no GCC country has Iran as their biggest trading partner (nobody is even close to that) nor do any GCC citizens live in Iran let alone 1 million as the other way around.

The trade is very one-sided and in favor of GCC. KSA and other GCC countries cutting ties with Iran (as they did not Iran) will have no impact on them. The impact will be bigger the other way around.

Please educate yourself on the topic before you comment. This way debates will be better.

Sad developments by both sides who find this proxy war more important than wellbeing of the people of the region. Pakistan, Turkey, Indonesia and others should work to defuse situation.
