Saudi Arabia awards $22.5 bln contracts to build Riyadh metro

Will Saudis sit in Trains ? People use to think the same about Emiratis when they were building the Metro in Dubai. In reality it didn't work out because a lot of them didn't want to sit with Bengalis, Filipinos, Afghans, Pakistanis and Indians.

Ya i know infrastructure is necessary for industrialization. But Metro Project in 22 billion naaaaa it's over Priced Project from Western Companies.

Be careful Most Important Thing to keep industrialization alive is Human Power , Professionals, Friendly Environment , without them this heavy Over Priced infrastructure will become cancer for Economy in Future.

Mate you don't know what your talking about. What do you think that saudi's are stupid?

Here I give you a example of Turkey.

This project is expected to finish in 2023 my friend.
The entire project costs 45 billion dollars.
High speed rail's and trains are expensive.

@al-Hasani , @Bubblegum Crisis

Something noticed me.
One of the Turkish high speed line is going to Aleppo Syria, one of the saudi line is going to Jordan.
I have a feeling that they are going to connect these two lines.

Like I told you before, Turkey's developmental plans are based on one notion, and one notion only, that's either to come up with something of high quality - Even if it meant that it would take ages to reach to the point in which it satisfies Turkey - or nothing.

Simple examples, your missile programs, UAVs, and the Altay project.

Your add-ups are important though, but for me, I understand what your plans and engineers, and what they look like.

The train is going to stop at our work places, in other word, the Gov't is forcing you to take the trains or stuck in traffic.

The planners are geniuses, cause my uncle is in there :D

With that kind of money spent in infrastructure in Saudi Arabia and entire gulf region, GCC should have negotiated joint contract which could have lowered cost. Also, these projects give huge leverage to Saduis and other gulf countries for developing own engineering manpower, manufacturing and other capabilities. Can anyone point out if any such initiatives had been taken?

Makkah-Madinah train set to roll by January 2014

Friday 24 August 2012

JEDDAH:
Construction is under way on the first high-speed passenger railway line between Makkah and Madinah and is expected to be complete by January 2014.

Transport Minister Jabara Al-Seraisry, said the new Madinah railway station situated close to the Prince Muhammad Airport would serve Haj and Umrah pilgrims more efficiently.

“The work on the Haramain High Speed Rail Project between Makkah and Madinah is progressing on time and as planned,” Al-Seraisry, who is also chairman of the Saudi Railway Organization, told Al-Jazirah daily.

The 480-km railway line, constructed specifically for high-speed electric trains, will pass through the port city of Jeddah.

The first phase of the Haramain project includes the building of a railway station at Makkah and Madinah and two stations in Jeddah including the one at King Abdulaziz International Airport.

Initially the Haramain railway is expected to carry more than 3 million passengers annually. According to statistics, more than 3.5 million pilgrims were transported between Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah in 2005.

The same year saw more than 2 million Umrah pilgrims. According to studies conducted by the Haj Ministry, demand for transporting Haj pilgrims is expected to double over the next 25 years and Umrah pilgrims will total 11 million.

This, along with the huge potential for employment of Saudis, resulted in significant investment in the transport sector.

Minister Al-Seraisry said Saudization of the sector would start at 75 percent, with the intention to achieve 100 percent.

The project contract specifies an institute to train Saudi workers on high-speed technology be established.

“Technical matters relating to issues like safety, however, would require foreign experts,” he said.

Saudi Arabia currently has 1,200 km of railway lines and when current rail projects are complete, the total will be closer to 7,000 km.

A SR 30.8 billion contract was signed between the government and Al-Shoula Co., a Saudi-Spanish consortium, to implement Phase II of the Haramain project in January.

New railway and expansion projects currently underway in the Kingdom include North-South Rail, the Land-bridge Project between Riyadh and Jeddah, and the GCC Railway.

The North-South Rail has two components: A service to transport minerals to manufacturing centers at the Ras Al-Khair port in the Arabian Gulf; and a passenger and freight service. It will start at the Jordanian border and link with the Riyadh to Dammam Railway.

The GCC railway project will connect the six GCC members, starting in Kuwait, passing through Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, and Saudi Arabia, and ending in Oman.

North-South Railway contracts awarded

RIYADH – Three contracts amounting to SR2.39 billion were signed Tuesday to build Saudi Arabia’s 2,400-km North-South railway.

The railroad will link the Kingdom’s rich bauxite and phosphorus mines in the far north with planned Gulf coast processing and export facilities at Ras Al-Zour on the Arabian Gulf. It is expected to be ready for freight transport next year.

Abdulaziz Al-Assaf, chairman of Public Investment Fund (PIF) signed the Saudi Railways Company (SRC) contracts with French defense group Thales and construction giant Saudi Binladin Group, China’s CSR Corp, and the US firm ElectroMotive.

Thales and Saudi Binladin Group were awarded a SR1.7 billion ($453 million) contract to build signalling, ticketing, communications and security systems for the entire stretch of the railroad.

The contract’s value was updated in the final signing of the deal. An earlier figure of SR2 billon was based on estimates from the government and companies.

“This is a strategic win for our company,” said Olivier Houssin, Thales’ executive vice president for commercial and security operations. “It is an area where we want to expand.

As part of the deal, and to encourage Saudi companies’ participation, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with Saudi Advanced Electronic Company (AEC), an Economic Offset Program firm, to engage Saudi engineers and technicians in the project, which includes operation, maintenance and spare parts manufacturing.

ElectroMotive Diesel Inc. was awarded a SR337,794,487 (about $90 million) contract to design and manufacture 25 diesel locomotives of 4,300 horse power each.

Each locomotive is for a 3-km-long 160-wagon loaded train of 16,000 tons .

China’s South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Industry Corporation (CSR) won a SR342,299,074 (about$91.3 million) contract to manufacture and design 668 wagons. Of these, 524 wagons will be used for phosphate transfer, with each wagon carrying 100 tons.

Finance Minister Ibrahim Al-Assaf said in a news briefing held at the Finance ministry that the contracts include leveling the ground and paving new lines in the Al-Nofoud desert.

The North-South Railway extends from Hazm Al-Jalameed and Hadithah in the north to Ras Al-Zour on the Arabian Gulf, with extensions to Al-Jouf, Hail, Qassim and Riyadh.

The project is progressing on schedule and will be concurrent with the completion of phosphate and bauxite facilities in Ras Al-Zour, he said.

The freight train operations will start in 2010 when the building facilities at Ras Al-Zour are to be completed, he said.

The entire project – including passenger transport – is estimated to cost a total of about SR13.125 billion ($3.5 billion) when complete in 2011-2012.

The entire project is estimated to cost a total of about SR13.125 billion ($3.5 billion) when complete in 2011-2012.

Al-Assaf said costs and other details of primary plans for the project to link the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states are still under consideration. The GCC leaders have given the project a preliminary nod. “However, at the end, the resolution depends on its economic feasibility,” Al-Assaf said.

For Thales, the North-South Railway contract offers encouragement to bid for other big government contracts.

Houssin said Thales also hopes to take part in the Saudi east-west Landbridge rail project, involving some 1,100 km of new track, the second of three huge multi-billion dollar rail projects the government is developing. The third is the Haramain Train Project, the contract for which was signed several weeks ago. This is a 444-km high-speed railway link between the Makkah and Madina via Jeddah.

I have three questions;

1. Isn't this new technology bida'h?

2. Would women be allowed to travel on these subways considering they are not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia? If women are allowed on new transportation system then how is ban on women driving justified?

3. Isn’t it funny that one of the companies involved is Samsung from Korea? Koreans would be laughing their head off realising Saudis are trying to convert Koreans to their supposedly superior Shariah while unable to make even a needle on their own; non-Muslims have to come over and do everything for Saudis. Lot of good wahabi Shariah is doing to Saudis.

:laughcry:

1. Einstein, do you even understand Islam? It seems that you don't know more than a person who does not even know what Islam means in the first place! It is solely bid'ah to change the Noble Qur'an and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (saws) thus the Islamic jurisprudence cannot contradict those two. Hence, bid'ah in worldly matters such as technology, medicine, computers, etc. is allowed, but bid'ah in religious matters are strictly forbidden, as they were by Prophet Muhammad (saws) himself. First know about your own religion before spreading nonsense. Just a friendly advice if you don't want to be ridiculed.

2. Saudi women are allowed to travel with public transport. The ban on women driving is something I don't agree with and about 50% of Saudis especially young people who nearly form 70% of the population (people under 30 years). Besides King Abdullah has pledged to change the law.

3. Why is that so funny? Local and non-local companies work inside KSA since it is a free market.

Besides maybe you should think twice again before you write a post. Ever heard about the Saudi BinLaden Group which is the largest construction firm in the world?

4. Why do you even care? Last time I saw then internal Saudi Arabian matters are none of your business. You are neither an KSA national, an Arab or a Sunni Muslim.

:laughcry:

1. Isn't this new technology bida'h?

According to your per logic, it surely is an rootless innovation, so yes. But, to us no, not at all.

2. Would women be allowed to travel on these subways considering they are not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia? If women are allowed on new transportation system then how is ban on women driving justified?

Half glass full, yes, I was stationed during Hajj twice, and I've seen as many women as you're brain can never dare to comprehend using the train. As for driving cars for women, the issue we have is exclusively based on social, and seuirty concerns, but I'm not quite sure wether it was stated in Quran that women can't drive a car, ride and dismount horses or whatever, which means your argument reflects how much of an ignorant some people can really be. Half glass empty, it appears to us that you are nothing but a pure bleeping LoLtard.

What does Samsung have to do with the Muslim federation in Korea? Those Muslims requested our help and their voice is being heard! And there is nothing much you can do about it except burning up with jealousy.

Siemens to supply 74 Inspiro metros to Riyadh | Global Rail News

Siemens to supply 74 Inspiro metros to Riyadh

Siemens is to build 74 Inspiro trains for Riyadh’s new metro system – the biggest project of its kind in the world.

As well as supplying rolling stock, Siemens will deliver the electrification and signalling system as part of the BACS consortium, which is building two of the six planned driverless metro lines for the city.

The Riyadh Metro is the most ambitious urban rail project in the world, with around 175 kilometres of new track and 85 new stations expected to be built in the next few years.

Siemens, whose portion of the contract is worth around $2.1 billion, has today (October 10) unveiled more details about exactly what part it will play in building the new desert metro.

The new Inspiro vehicles, which will be built in two and four-car configurations, will feature higher-capacity air conditioning systems than usual to cope with the extreme heat, which can push 45 degrees celsius at the height of summer.

The bogies, traction drive, brakes and doors will also all be fitted with special seals and filters to keep sand out.

Siemens to supply Inspiro trains for the Riyadh metro - Railway Gazette

Siemens to supply Inspiro trains for the Riyadh metro

SAUDI ARABIA: Siemens has announced details of the trainsets and control technology it is to supply for Riyadh metro lines 1 and 2.

Siemens is part of the BACS consortium with Bechtel, Almabani General Contractors and Consolidated Contractors Co which the Arriyadah Development Authority selected for the €7·5bn contract to build two of the six planned metro lines, with a total length of 63·3 km. Siemens' €1·5bn share of the contract includes rolling stock, signalling and electrification equipment.

The company is to supply a total of 74 Inspiro metro cars in two and four-car sets. The standard gauge trainsets will have aluminium bodyshells and a top speed of 90 km/h. They will have high-capacity air-conditioning systems to suit the local climate, and the bogies, traction systems, brakes and doors will have seals and filters designed to reduce sand ingress.

The signalling and WLAN-based train control system will be designed to support unattended driverless operation with 90 sec headways, giving a capacity of 21 000 passengers/h. Siemens will supply 31 interlockings, fit out the operations control centre and train the future staff.

The electrification system will include regenerative braking and diesel generators to provide emergency power.
