It's diffucult to tell. Can it ever reach 100% in any country given that some people always never learn to read and write due to limitations of their own?

I think that it is very close to reaching the highest possible percentage. Probably the only ones that are still illiterate are a small part of the very old generation. Often people from the lowest social classes.

But for that group of people the mentioned literacy programs (often during summer) have been initiated and they have for years worked to eradicate illiteracy. Like the news I posted show.

Well, this % only include Arabs not immigrants, right?

I actually beg to differ...each country has a different meaning of literacy it seems...coz not everyone in Finland is literate...

And how does one get data from N.Korea when there is limited contact with them? I mean we dont even know exactly what is going on there...every now and then all they do is threat America...and America doesnt even take them seriously..I am a little surprised at how they are surviving being cut off

Anyway in all seriousness I am happy for those elders. Imagine being a shepherd like the gentleman mentioned in the article, a farmer (or whatever you do) all your life and not being able to read or write. It's a great thing that they despite their old age can learn to read and write. If that is not the societies obligation to assist and help such people who for various reasons have a hard life then what is the function?

Nationals only I think as the migrants are not citizens. Also most migrants do not speak Arabic fluently let alone are able to write it. They mostly communicate in English. Not all nationals of KSA have Arab origins btw. Contrary to popular people there are regions/provinces of KSA that are quite diverse. Hijaz being one of them for instance.

We also have a 2 million big population of Afro-Arabs of mixed origins from Africa (Sub-Sahara mostly).

Instead of allowing madrassahs to give Islamic education to kids, government should start giving it to them in a proper way. We should also update our syllabus.
