Sarkozy backs permanent UNSC seat for India​

New York, Mar 30: French president Nicholas Sarkozy on Tuesday, Mar 30, appealed for India's inclusion as a permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC), adding that the world body needs to be expanded to make it more inclusive.

Criticising the present structure of the UN Security Council, Sarkozy, while speaking at the prestigious Columbia University, pressed for the inclusion of emerging voices like India, Africa and the Arab world need to find a place in the UNSC.

"Did you know that India... in 30 years time... the world's most populous nation, doesn't have a permanent seat on the Security Council?" Sarkozy said in an event hosted by Columbia University as part of the World Leaders Forum.

Sarkozy kept aside his prepared speech and chose to 'speak from the heart', as he questioned the non-inclusion of African or Arab country as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

"Did you know that there isn't a single Arab country that represents hundreds of millions of people that has a permanent seat on the UN Security Council," he added.

Emphasing on the need to include emerging countries like India in the UNSC, the French President said that emerging world economies cannot be expected to be part of solving world problems unless they are granted a permanent UNSC seat.

"How could you expect Brazil or India or Africa for that matter to endorse part of the responsibility vis-a-vis the world's major difficulties and conflict if they are not even listened to... would you like to be in their shoes?" he asked.

"Would you like to be told when it comes for paying up...step up but when it comes to speaking up step down... who can go along with that... nobody," he added.

Sarkozy argued that membership of the General Assembly was not sufficient and US and Europe must was worked together in ensuring the participation of the nations that would be emerge as big powers in the coming decades.

Actully problem is not france she already said many time before that they are our supporter. main problem is USA and China who is stopping indias door for UNSC.

no actully they have said onces that they are with us for UNSC
but as you know distrust between india and china is very high. so it is still undecided their actual view same goes for USA too.

March 30: The French President, Mr Nicholas Sarkozy, on Tuesday, made a strong pitch for India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC), which he said needs to be expanded to make it more inclusive.
Speaking at the prestigious Columbia University, Mr Sarkozy said emerging voices like India, Africa and the Arab world need to find a place in the UNSC, as he slammed the present structure of the world body.
“Did you know that India, in 30 years time — the world’s most populous nation — doesn’t have a permanent seat on the Security Council?” said the French president, who was hosted by Columbia University.
Setting aside his prepared speech to “speak from the heart,” Mr Sarkozy said this Security Council and its membership was decided at the end of the World War II way back in 1945 questioning why no African or Arab country had a permanent seat on the UNSC, despite representing over a billion people together.
“How could you expect Brazil or India or Africa for that matter to endorse part of the responsibility vis-a-vis the world’s major difficulties and conflict if they are not even listened to... would you like to be in their shoes?” he asked.

The already supported it long time back, but always stop short of saying India should have Veto powers.

The biggest problem is the United States. The US says no to any change to UNSC. Pakistan says abolish the UNSC all together.

agreed but their are other major problems too.
e.g.

The biggest hurdle is that India, Japan,Brazil and Germany, the G-4 have formed a block and have been pressing for their case jointly. they have been pressing for all four to be admitted at the same time.

In case of Japan I do not see PRC supporting them.
In case of India I do not see Pakistan will support India

no this is also not right.right now UNSC is almost irrelevant and if permanent member don't want that it should dead then they have to modify it(either they want or they don't want).
whenever it will modify then defiantly india will be one of it's permanet member it is just a matter of time nothing else.
don't forget these G4 nations are emerging power so they can't ignore it also.

China Supports India's Bid To United Nations Security Council Permanent Seat

China on Monday said it would back India's bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. According to TV reports, India in return, has agreed to respect its neighbour’s claim on Taiwan.

Reports further state that Chinese premier Wen Jiabao has said that both the countries have decided to move forward on border issue. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is currently in China, said, "We have agreed to deepen military cooperation with China."

Earlier, government sources indicated that they were expecting a resolution of the fresh irritants on border issue during talks that national security adviser and special representative for the boundary talks, M K Narayanan, will hold with Dai Bingguo, the Chinese pointsperson.

The subject, unlike the border issue, featured in the discussion the PM had with Wen at the dinner hosted by the Chinese premier on Sunday. Significantly, Wen refrained from any mention of the criteria-based approach that the Chinese had harped on to contest America’s efforts to secure concessions for India from the Nuclear Suppliers' Group.
