France says Iran could face European sanctions over its recent launch of ballistic missiles.

Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said sanctions would be taken "if necessary", following talks in Paris with US and European counterparts.

Iran drew strong criticism earlier this month when it launched several missiles as part of a military exercise.

In January, the US imposed sanctions on Iranian companies and individuals in response to a previous round of tests.

That move came a day after international nuclear sanctions on Iran were lifted as part of a deal designed to prevent it developing nuclear arms.

As part of the deal - agreed with world powers - a UN resolution that barred Iran from undertaking any work on "ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear warheads" was terminated.

A new resolution, 2231, then came into force that "calls upon" Iran not to undertake any activity related to "ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons".

Speaking alongside Mr Ayrault on Sunday, US Secretary of State John Kerry described the recent Iranian missile tests as a breach of UN resolutions.

The US has asked the UN Security Council to discuss the matter on Monday.

Iran says its missiles are for use solely as a conventional deterrent. It says it has ballistic missiles with a range of 2,000km (1,250 miles), which means they would be capable of reaching Israel and US military bases in the Middle East.

In another development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called on the world powers that backed the Iran nuclear deal to punish Tehran for its recent missile tests.

He told a cabinet meeting on Sunday it would be "important as a test of the powers' determination to enforce the nuclear deal with Iran, and we of course expect their responses".

BRUSSELS— European Union foreign ministers will weigh a response to Iran’s recent ballistic missile tests on Monday as the Obama administration considers what steps it should take.
Iran last week carried out a barrage of tests following vows by officials to press ahead with its missile program despite U.S. pressure to curtail it.

The Obama administration has said the tests don’t breach last year’s nuclear deal between Iran and six major powers but that they are inconsistent with the United Nations Security Council resolution that was approved in the aftermath of the nuclear agreement.

In January, the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned 11 Iranian entities over alleged links to the missile program.
Earlier this year, former French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabiussaid the bloc should weigh a sanctions response because of the tests but the idea quickly faded.
However, several foreign ministers said Monday that following last week’s tests, the bloc was now considering some action.

“I think we have to react,” said Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak. “We have to have an assessment of the test and then we should have a discussion about how to react to this.”

U.K. Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said the bloc’s foreign ministers will discuss the issue Monday and that he expects EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini to address the issue later in the day.
“We need to make sure that our approach is balanced so that while we exploit the opportunities that come from an opening with Iran…we also have to be clear that Iran continues to carry out unacceptable behavior: missile testings, aggressive behavior and sponsorship of terrorism around the Gulf,” he said.

It isn’t clear if a final decision will be made on Monday. One senior EU official said that while the issue would definitely be broached Monday there was so far “no response foreseen” to the tests. It often takes the 28-nation bloc some weeks to agree on joint action.

On her way into the foreign ministers meeting, Ms. Mogherini said she would ask foreign ministers for their views “on which issues or sectors to re-engage, to reopen full relations and…to cooperate with Iran bilaterally.”

US failed to convince the rest of the members of security council to consider any violations according to this:

"A call is different from a ban so legally you cannot violate a call, you can comply with a call or you can ignore the call, but you cannot violate a call," Churkin said. "The legal distinction is there."
Resolution 2231 "calls upon" Iran to refrain from certain ballistic missile activity. Western nations see that as a clear ban, though council diplomats say China and other council members agree with Russia's and Iran's view that such work is not banned.

I wonder. Was about to ask the same question.
They should have at least hold on for some time before carrying out such tests, instead of working hard with P-5 powers to make a deal, only to start provocative ballistic missiles tests few days later after the sanctions have been lifted. It only strengthens the hardliners in the U.S, U.k, France who have been against this deal in the first place.
Too bad for Obama, he will be even more under pressure now. Next U.S president will want to capitalize on this issue even more.

I've always felt that Iran should just sacrifice and go ahead and get nukes because no matter what you do Israel, US and NATO will always have a raging hard on for you. Look what negotiating brought Gaddafi. At least with nukes you can negotiate from a position of strength. Understand that you're dealing with evil psycopaths. There's a bill in the Senate to put sanctions and Iran and the Obama administration the most gentle administration you'll be working with for the foreseeable future. European powers have already signed deals worth tens of billions of dollars with Iran, Airbus alone has signed deals running in the tens of billions with Iran.

Its not like Iran is doing us any favour, they are in urgent need of these advanced aircrafts, considering their outdated/backward aerospace industry and the old aircafts they have which are in urgent need of repairs/servicing. Something only European powers and the U.S are able to do for them. Who else will they buy these large super jets from? Lol

Airbus and boeing have been doing just fine without Iran for decades. We dont need them the way they need us. We have been doing just fine without them all these decades. So your point about putting money in our mouth is mute and irrelevant mate. Busiiness is business, they aren't doing us any favors. So doesnt matter much if they offer more deals, as far as they stick to the deal then everybody will be happy, if not then sanctions will definetly follow, Billions or no billions in our mouth.

So It all depends on the mullahs how this nuclear deal will play out after obama leaves office, the next U.S president wouldnt be so kind with them. So they better be ready and not engage in unnecessary provocations.
