let talk first about china. we are in a very vulnerable position: the close proximity to china. So why does VietNam still wants to cling onto China and not get closer to the US/west?
One country (China) constantly harrasses and publically insult VietNam, has a huge trade surplus over VietNam without caring about the imbalance, never provided any help or assistance (political or financial) to VietNam this past 30 years.
The other country (US) have been providing political support to VietNam, assistance such as agent orange removal, emergency aid, and allows a huge trade surplus for VietNam.
if you look at the map, we share land and sea border with the chinese. they not only started plenty of wars against vietnam, but supported our enemies to attack us. no wonder we hate them, we have more than enough from their bullying and aggressions. the only chance to stop them is creating a military balance by either increasing landmass and maritime domain or acquiring modern weapons.
our forefathers eastern move to the south china sea and marches to the southern and western frontiers were all attempts to get our military on a par with the chinese, as we want to end their policy of intimidation.
vietnam relationship to america is complicated and complex. it is not all fine as it should be. why not allying with America? it is easier said than done. it is a very complex issue. we have to calculate with chinese retaliation to such move.
