Samsung has broken ground on a $220m research and development centre in Hanoi, its first outside Korea.

Work began without an inaugural ceremony, originally scheduled for Saturday, owing to fears over the coronavirus.

Vietnam recently acted to prevent tourism from areas such as South Korea that have been hit by the outbreak.

Located in the city’s upmarket Tay Ho (West Lake) district, the R&D centre will have 16 storeys above ground and three underground floors, with a total floor area of 80,000 sq m.

When complete towards the end of 2022 it will have 800 staff working on Samsung products, as well as emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G networks, the internet of things and big data. As well as the laboratories, it will offer staff a gym, a clubhouse and a sky garden.

Choi Joo Ho, Samsung’s general director for Vietnam, said in a statement that the centre would be a strategic milestone in the firm’s 12-year investment history in Vietnam. He added: “This is also where we realise our commitment to contribute to the development of Vietnam’s science and technology through training and nurturing talented human resources in the field of high technology.”

The Korean company has invested about $17bn in Vietnam, making it the largest single source of foreign funding, and making Vietnam its largest manufacturing hub.

Samsung opened a smartphone factory in Bac Ninh Province in 2008, followed by a second plant in Thai Nguyen Province. It also has a consumer appliance and television-making complex in Ho Chi Minh City and an existing R&D unit in central Hanoi.

This is good quality investment. Alot of Korea love Vietnamese hospitality and cultural exchange. Same reason why US loves Thailand

Thailand is good. Great holiday destination.

Is this wise? Vietnam does not have a track record of innovation.

3 KOR Korea (Republic of) 2.05
...
18 ISR Israel 1.37
19 CHN China 1.30
...
56 SAU Saudi Arabia 0.12
57 VNM Vietnam 0.09
58 SWZ Eswatini 0.09

Vietnam is 15x less innovative than South Korea.

.
this is a cunning move by the koean. The purpose of this r&d center is nothing but a façade to snatch away Vietnamese engineers from joining the r&d of Vsmart and Viettel considering samsung's smarphone market share already feeling the heat from Vsmart and Vsmart is just one year old.

No, our hospitality is terrible, our workers r worse than Indonesia . SK factories got burned in 2014 conflict.

The main reason Samsung came to VN cos we dislike CN and VN can contain CN and keep the balance in the region

Haha. Lets have some sense of humor, bro.

Btw, if PLA cover SCS ( east VN sea) wt sea mines, then SK will collapse. Thats the main reason why Samsung, Panasonic r in VN, to contain CN wt VN.

Then China don't need carriers or destroyers, just cover the sea with sea mines. Lolol

. . .
Yup our useless ships sunk Viet ships... Lol so when you gonna attack China since our ships are so useless?
Ur useless ships dare not come and save Cnese in 2014 conflict like in "wolf warrior " movie. Completely usless.

Yes.we will attack u when US or CN collapse, just to make sure both of u cant attack VN together like in 1979. Defeat US or CN alone is easy.

then what does korea invented? sound recorder? image recorder? internet? airplane? car? electricity? computer? nuclear bomb? ballistic missile? penicillin? jet engine? field medalist? nobel science prize? kpop? I'm still pondering which one? The fact that Samsung has r&d center in 14 countries is a testimony that korean lack the capabilities to work on their "technologies". I will not be surprised if most to all of any Korean "patents" are the work of non-Korean in those r&d center that Samsung hire.

.
samsung Vietnam smart phones are already available in market and are mostly refurbished ones which are much cheaper as compared to original smartphones so such investment is not unexpected

Years ago I read a lot of online news article which revealed that Samsung smartphone and other technology innovations mostly owe to the close cooperation with Russian scientists and research institutes under an agreement, this was the reason why Nokia failed but Samsung survived against Apple's I-phone. For example this article from 2013 in Forbes.com, a credible source.
