Sami rejects law against forced conversion of religion

LAHORE - JUI-S chief Maulana Samiul Haq has termed the Sindh Assembly’s legislation against forced conversion of religion un-Islamic and demanded dissolution of the legislature.
Addressing a Press conference after presiding over meeting of his party here yesterday, he said that the step of the Provincial Assembly was considered damaging to Islamic identity of the country.
“Islamic forces have rejected the Bill. We demand dissolution of the secular Assembly and imposition of Governor Rule in Sindh,” said Maulana Sami, the head of his own faction of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.
The Sindh Assembly had unanimously passed on Thursday a law against forced conversion of religion in the province. A private bill, Criminal Law (Protection of Minorities), was tabled by Pakistan Muslim League – Functional lawmaker Nand Kumar a year ago. “Forced conversion is an abhorrent and violent offence and an issue that has become prevalent across Sindh [that] must be eliminated by recognising the importance of tolerance, peace and respect for all religions and persons, irrespective of their religion,” the bill read.
According to the bill, no person shall be deemed to have changed their religion until they attain the age of maturity, which is 18 years. Similarly, the decision of a minor to convert to another religion will not be recognised until they reach the age of maturity.
Maulana Sami, who claims himself the father of Taliban, smelled a conspiracy behind the move of Sindh Assembly and declared the law an agenda to promote “secularism” in the country.
He said that secular forces inclined to damage the Islamic identity of Pakistan which could not materialised as the country came into being in the name of Islam.
There is widespread anger against the law among the religious circles. Islamic scholars and major religio-politica parties including Jamaat-e-Islami, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F, Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan already rejected the legislation and threatened to launch a protest movement if the Sindh government did not withdraw it.
The rights activists, however, are praising the law against forced conversion and declaring it will promote soft image of the country.
Maulana Sami, during the Press talk, was also furious against the “operation of security and law-enforcement agencies against Islamic seminaries.”
He said that the government was acting against madaris on Western agenda.
He criticised the “forced eviction of Afghan migrants,” demanding Afghanis should be given time to stay in Pakistan until prevailing of peace in their country.
He congratulated the new Army Chief, stating bringing peace and order inside Pakistan and rehabilitation of Fata tribes would be big challenge for Qamar Javed Bajwa.
Maulana highlighted the need of ruthless military operation against foreign elements and terrorists in Balochistan.
He condemned Indian brutalities in occupied Kashmir.
Abdur Rehman Farooqi, Hamidul Haq Haqqani, Shah Abdul Aziz, Asim Mahmood, Zaheerudin Babar and other attended the JUI-S meeting.
