Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rehman Barq has been booked for sedition following his recent remarks allegedly defending the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan and equating it with India’s own freedom struggle, police said on Wednesday.
He was charged under Indian Penal Code section 124A (sedition) following a complaint from BJP leader Rajesh Singhal on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police Chakresh Mishra said.

Singhal in his complaint said that Barq’s “controversial statement comes in the category of sedition”, he said.

The MP has been also booked under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), Mishra said.

Besides Barq, two others – Mohammad Muqueem and Chaudhary Faizan – have also been booked under these sections, the officer said, adding that the matter is being probed.
Following the Sambhal MP’s remarks, Samajwadi Party (SP) workers Muqueem and Faizan posted material on social media in support of the Taliban, according to the FIR.
Responding to questions from reporters on Monday, Lok Sabha member Barq had said the Taliban wanted to free their country and it was Afghanistan’s internal matter.
He had called the Taliban a force that did not allow Russia or the United States to establish themselves in Afghanistan, “and now they want to run their own country”.

The MP had said that when India was under British Rule, the entire country fought for independence.
“They want to be free. This is their personal matter. How can we interfere?” the SP legislator had said on developments in Afghanistan.
Endorsing the Taliban takeover, Barq had said the Afghans want to “run their own country in the manner they wanted.”
The remarks drew sharp criticism from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
In the state legislative council, the chief minister on Tuesday slammed the opposition MP.
“He was shamelessly supporting the Taliban. It means supporting their barbaric act. We are a parliamentary democracy. Where are we heading? We are supporting people who are a blot on humanity,” the CM added.
Asked to comment on the MP’s remarks, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said he had not personally heard them. “But if this type of statement has been given then there is no difference between that person and Imran Khan.”
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday had appeared to endorse the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul, saying Afghanistan has broken the “shackles of slavery”

We need to be careful with people who has their own ideology that goes contrary to our national interest. They should think twice before making these statements.

It is surprising to see that he was charged with sedition for exercising free speech. It would be a chargeable offence if the MP had helped Taliban against the security interests of India. But merely making a statement in support of the Taliban regime does not equate to sedition.

India should rein in on rampant unbridled nationalism.

He didn't even make a statement of support. Just commented on an analogy with India's freedom struggle. Likely a misplaced analogy, but cannot be construed as a statement of support. In any case, what he said was being stated by many analysts in India as well.

Contrast this with the numerous speeches in India by Hindus where they openly call for killings of Muslims and police drag their feet on registering FIRs

I am not sure Kashogi murder who did it, but a thought that a state can be shattered by free speech is due to arrogance. The arrogant won't like any dissent voice as it shakes his ideology that what is right. Instead of the feedback and an advice, the ruler considers that as blasphemy.

Yes, a lot of agitation can promote protests that can rectify government policy and essential for democracy but protests cannot 'defeat' a state.

But egoistic one man rule like modi (or MBS) can pass such verdicts.

India considers the Taliban as terrorists. So, yeah not surprising.

No it doesn't. Here is the list. Find Taliban on the list and I will give you a biscuit.

Oops...no biscuit for you today

Translation:
Hindutva is the only ideology that is acceptable

India ideology is its majoritarian ideology. Obviously we wouldn't want to run our country based on your religious sentiments. Let me tell you India will always be defined by its Dharmic culture. Islam, Christianity or anything else will have to live under its shadow. Period.

.
While the MP is an Islamic fundamentalist like our own thread started settled in Canada, we have quite a few who love Taliban without understanding the core issues.

And it's stupid of the govt to file cases under sections that will be thrown away in court. So will the GoI stop engaging with the Taliban? If they are terrorists (yea they are) then why did GoI involve in backchannel discussions with them? Quite honestly this Yogi guy needs to be put into place.

Can you lefties stop victim card? Or have you forgot that sar tan se juda rallies or 15 minute speeches or Bangalore fiasco last year?, or that is secularism? I don’t want some junooni wannabe Talibunnies doing same sh|t in India, that’s why ATS is deployed in Deoband.

Oh we all know that. I am sure your day got a tad bit better by expressing on PDF how vile you are. Just remember to build some toilets in your "dharmic culture".
If you hate hinduism, speak it up and leave our nation. If you are seduced by toilets then go live in a hindware shop.
