LAHORE: Unidentified miscreants attacked a candlelight vigil organised to mark death anniversary of former Punjab governor Salman Taseer who was murdered by his own security guard Mumtaz Qadri for demanding reforms in Pakistan’s blasphemy laws in 2011.

The attack was carried out when members of civil society gathered at Liberty Chowk to light candles in the slain politician’s memory.

Qadri, who was Taseer's bodyguard, shot him dead on January 4, 2011 at Kohsar Market in Islamabad over the politician's call for blasphemy laws to be reformed.

An anti-terrorism court had awarded death penalty to Mumtaz Qadri in October the same year.

Qadri was feted as a hero by a wide section of the public, including lawyers, and was even showered with rose petals as he arrived at court for a trial hearing.

The baton wielding miscreants tore apart banners and posters as they attacked members of civil society. Several people were injured in the sudden attack. The attackers, however, managed to flee before police arrived at the scene.

Civil society activists said that candlelight vigils have been organised in Taseer’s memory for the last four year, but this was the first time it was attacked.

Ordering a probe into the incident, DCO Captain (retd) Mohammad Usman has ordered swift arrest of the culprits behind the attack.

Where is our so called national action plan. They think they will make us fool forever.Well here is what i think no action plan for their mullah brothers.

.
This vigil in public square was actually planned provocation to get wrath of militants. These organisers and attendees probably would like to be martyrs as they proclaim Salman Taseer to be. This event should have been in a secure public building.

Or they could have done it in the safety of their homes. Why confront extremists openly, right?
On a parallel topic has Tasser's son been released by his kidnappers?

Jahil Janwar. Ye whoi Islamabad wali party hain.

Regrettably, poison of religious extremism is no longer limited to the Takfiri mullahs but steeped into every section of the society. Regret to say that majority of the defenders of the murderer Mumtaz Qadri are not ‘Jahil’ . Many of those who adorned him with garlands were lawyers; a few of the same lawyers are now judges. Ch. Nisar as well as Rana Sana ullah are extremist sympathisers. You will see that despite being on video, the attackers will not be caught and even if caught they will be set free.

How can one expect ‘Justice’ from the people who consider a person who killed the person he is supposed to guard in cold blood without any trial on mere hearsay a “Hero”?

I wish if late Slaman Taseer was careful with the choice of his words for calling 'shariah laws' 'kala qanoon' was not intelligent at all. That said, nobody except the government has the right to try and punish people, an understanding that is rapidly being faded away from Pakistani society thanks primarily to the successive governments own inadequacies. There is no justice in Pakistan and the privileged elite is practically immune to any type of legal consequences for their pockets are deep enough to get away with any crime they commit. This has resulted in a general unrest in society, and people have learnt that in order for them to live their lives they need protection, which is provided by the criminal and religious gangs. We must condemns the elements such as Mumtaz Qadri and those who support that kind of behavior/mindset, but at the same time we should also study why common Pakistanis are leaning towards or tolerating such elements among their ranks.

Pictures of the attackers were available on Internet. Wonder whats stopping the Govt. from initiating any action.

@Syed.Ali.Haider @syedali73 condem is very far many people think Mumtaz is national hero. And our government full of thugs money making factory.
Many of them consider him (Qadri) a hero because he was/is a commoner who killed the representative of corrupt blood sucking ruling elite. Even I want Pakistani ruling elite to be chased out and killed like dogs on the streets.

.
Like so many things this too has a sectarian tone
Mumtaz Qadri has become the poster boy of hardline braelvi mullahs
Its their way of showing thay can be tough macho men...basically trying to compete with the militant deobandis !
