I understand what you mean. I believe all people are TRYING to come closer to the same All Mighty Deity, i believe even Atheist do so, albeit in very subconscious way.

I dont believe there are competing deities, because its logically impossible. But i believe there are competing ideas about how the (metaphysical) world works and what understanding of an All Powerful deity is the most conductive for a just and sustainable human society.

That is why people who commit such crimes aren't doing it because of faith. It's about ego, politics and culture, hence appeals to their personal faith in God do not matter because they likely have none. I do not like Rushdie, but his Islamopohobia was relatively mild compared to post 9/11 global Islamophobic industry, which include social media. Think about Khashoggi.
