New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar's name has been recommended for nomination as a member of the Rajya Sabha. Sources say the batting legend has accepted the offer.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has reportedly written to the President on this matter. The letter is expected to be forwarded by the Home Ministry.

NDTV has learnt that apart from Sachin, there are two more names recommended for nomination are that of Bollywood actor Rekha, and businesswoman Anu Aga.

Observers point out that Sachin is actively involved in playing cricket and may be hard pressed for time. They also point out that he has been a most apolitical person and not even been associated with a political cause.

BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad said , "If he is nominated, we will expect him to devote time to Parliament. It is serious matter."

Congress' Renuka Choudhary deflected the question on Sachin's nomination by saying, "It'll be nice if he is in Parliament. He'll bat and we'll bowl googlies to him."

Sachin Tendulkar meets Sonia Gandhi

Sachin, and his wife Anjali, today paid a courtesy visit to Congress President Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath Residence in New Delhi. Mrs Gandhi wanted to meet the batting great and personally congratulate him on achieving the historic feat of scoring 100 international centuries recently.

Senior BCCI functionary and IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla was also present at Sonia Gandhi's residence. Mr Shukla said he had no knowledge of Sachin's reported Rajya Sabha nomination.

According to sources, Tendulkar and his wife spent close to half an hour with Sonia.

The Congress President is learnt to have talked in general about cricket and wished the player luck for his future.

The master-blaster who turned 39 on Tuesday, is in Delhi to play an IPL match for the Mumbai Indians against the Delhi Daredevils tomorrow.

Process of nomination to Rajya Sabha

Under article 80 of the Constitution, the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) is composed of not more than 250 members, of whom 12 are nominated by the President of India from amongst persons who have special knowledge or practical experience in respect of such matters as literature, science, art and social service.

In practice, the Home Ministry finalises on the names and notifies the process. The Prime Minister then writes to the President with the government's recommendations through the Home Ministry.Usually, a consent is sought before a person's name is recommended for nomination to the Upper House.

What a waste of seats in the parliament. pfft

I told you, our democracy is a joke. It is just that our national mentality that keeps us going stable and normally. Otherwise, we've the worst government on this planet (except maybe the Fat Kims of North Korea or our dear neighbors of course).

May I ask why?
What good would he do in the parliament. Would he be there during the parliamentary sessions or would visit the parliament for photo sessions only.

QFT. We got the worst set of parliamentarians, except a deserving few.

Sachin is an honest person, moreover, he has all the money in the world and technically won't be tempted towards corruption.

With the right team, he can be a good enough politician.

Did he accept the offer ?

#btw why is it a joke ? the president of India can nominate 2-3 members depending on individual merit... it is the prerogative of the president and not the commoners..

Why appoint someone who will never attend Parliament ? It does not make any sense.

I have no issues with it, but he should consider it only after he retires from cricket.

i don't know how you came to that conclusion.
he did not even contribute any thing big to the nation all he has done is play circket and he does it good. so i think he should stick with it unless he has an idea of supporting INDIA in its diplomatic and socio economic affires.
