India to export 500 Mw power to Bangladesh through SAARC Grid soon: POSOCO
India is already exporting 500 Mw of power to Bangladesh according to stipulation and provisions of the bilateral provisions

India’s grid manager Power System Operation Corporation (POSOCO) is confident the country would begin to export an additional power to an extent of 500 megawatt (Mw) to Bangladesh as soon as the work on SAARC grid is accomplished in the next one year.

“We could also draw considerably higher volumes of hydropower from nations such as Bhutan and Nepal,” said V K Agrawal, executive director, National Load Despatch Centre at POSOCO.

He was speaking at the National Conference on ‘Power Transmission and Distribution’ of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Indian government finalised a consensus over inter-country grid connecting the SAARC countries, which was pending for four years, in a meeting held with the representatives in the annual SAARC energy ministers meeting in Delhi in October 2014. Piyush Goyal, minister of state for coal, power and renewable energy had then said initial discussions would start for an integrated power transmission grid connecting India with its neighbouring nations, wherein excess production of power in one region can be used to meet deficit elsewhere

“In view of the deepening and thickening bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh following conclusion of the recent summit level talks between the prime ministers of the two countries, a decision has been taken to supply additional 500 mW of gas-fed electricity to Bangladesh,” said Agrawal.

India is already exporting 500 mW of power away to Bangladesh according to stipulation and provisions of their bilateral provisions. Agarwal said the government has recently concluded that another 500 mW power supply be restored to Bangladesh with completion of SAARC grid, which is likely to take a year.

The SAARC grid, which would connect India with its neighbouring countries with cross-border transmission network, is currently in the evolution phase.

India-Bhutan, India-Nepal and India-Bangladesh grids are interconnected and cross-border trade in bilateral mode is already taking place. India-Sri-Lanka asynchronous interconnection is under the process of finalisation. With regard to India-Pakistan, a suitable cross-border link is being considered.

Its a good plan,

But its only aim is to allow India to sell surplus power to Pakistan and Bangladesh, coz their politicians don't believe in funding power projects

Nope - once the transmission lines are synchronized and the SAARC power grid is commissioned - any country can supply its surplus power to any other country in the region -

Until now Bangladesh used to source power from India but once the grid is commissioned Bangladesh can import power from both Bhutan and Nepal as well - India will just provide the corridor under the SAARC Power Grid initiative.

India to give corridor for importing power from Nepal, Bhutan

It would be a revolutionary step in economic integration of the region.

A great step to integrate pur economies with our partners :enjoy:

Would like to know the opinion of Pakistani friends on this Power connectivity grid issue !!!! :pakistan:

Unfortunately our history of building infrastructure isn't great. This is a SAARC project but with the pace of development here in Pakistan, I feel it's going to remain an India-Bhutan-Nepal-Bangladesh project for a long time.

Pakistan & India should cooperate in this matter we have surplus power in the state of Gujarat which can be sold to Pakistan anytime

Let's hope the India–Sri Lanka HVDC Interconnection is approved by the Sri Lankan government by the year end (would only be approved by the new government after the upcoming elections) - Will be set up within five year once approved -

This $472 million - 500 MW undersea power link project will be the second project of its kind, after the transnational 2,000 MW power transmission line between Britain and France.

The line is expected to expand to 1,000 MW later. The 285-km power link, including submarine cables over a stretch of 50 km, will enable the two nations to trade surplus power.

Pakistan is in a position to fulfill all of it's power needs and export the surplus. The only hurdle is lack of development in this sector.
But in the meantime, none of our polticians would want to be labelled as the guy who imported "Indian" energy. Even though there's no objection to the influx of substandard Indian tv shows (no offence) being aired here. Ironic.

Sad .. but true.

Finally, its the common man who bears the brunt of politics.

What would it have mattered to those in Sind who suffered from heat strokes where the electricity came that powered their fans ?

I guess you are true...Pakistan will not import Indian power...making it confined to India-Bhutan-Nepal-Bangladesh
