Saab offers to make Gripen in India, with transfer of technology

The two areas that India would most like ToT in is propulsion (engine) and radar- these are two areas where SAAB is in no postion to offer ToT as it doesn't own the IPRs. SAAB is trying to dupe the leadership and public by this "Make in India" headline but when you actually dive down into the details you can see SAAB is little more than a lead intergrator and the only thing India would get from purchasing the Gripen is killing off the LCA.

No, you're going a bit far! The engine is American but SAAB modifies it a whole lot. They have important knowledge
in that domain if a lot less than Safran or Rolls-Royce. As for the radar, they've sourced a European product made
to fit at AESA level. There must be a reason other than size why they chose a different option than CEASAR? You're
likely right on this IPR set being Selex more than theirs but we'd need proof of that.
As for the integrator part, you forgot the coat hanger to that mantle of parts : the cell? I'm sorry but Gripen is a better design then Tejas and that is SAAB. In fact, they are to be warmly applauded for maintaining full spectrum abilities
with low series and long timelines.

This said, yes wholeheartedly to your last part!
Think that the MRCA switched to a MediumMRCA precisely to protect the TEJAS by putting the minimum weight
above that of the LCA.
That this was done even though the decision excluded the M2000 and forbade buying that line that Dassault had offered.
That this decision was further stuck to through the scariest moments of the saga and corrected upwards by adding
to the top heavy MKIs when need forced you to.

And today, Gripen would be picked as a MiG-21 replacement over the dead body of IAF's fave, despite its top beast
and over its autonomous future? Yeah, right!
Despite all that I have said above, the commercial side of SAAB reeks of desperation, has for years!

Even unimpressed as I may be by it, the LCA must be inducted and made to work. It may be arduous but it has to
happen for many reasons. It may only serve the IAF without N-frilly version. It may number only 200ish in fine 7
it may be a harsh teacher to its grease monkeys and maintenance but it has to be experienced for the future.
It's like that child with some limitation, at some point, stop the dilly-daliting and live/love with it!

Maybe the question should be : why do we even post this crap beyond a mention in a news thread?

Peace around your part of the woods mate, Tay.

@PARIKRAMA , @Taygibay and I have discussed this a few times- what exactly is the merit in SAAB's offer? What industrial benfits can SAAB give to India?

Never going to happen because of the conflict of interests- why would SAAB want to help develop a rival to its own product (the Gripen)? Look at the proposed specs of the LCA Mk.2- they are not too dissimilar to the Gripen NG, are SAAB going to actively help dilute their USP (affordability)?

Actually SAAB needs indian funds and Indian help in developing Sea Grippen.

Saab, lockheed martin, boeing, rafale, all dying to make their planes in india.
How do our neighbours feel about it. :cheesy:
We are well aware of your manufacturing capabilities ;)

We watched we waited then 12 years passed and we forgot that there was even such a thing MMRCA. Every thing has a time frame in which it can leave a foot print after that it becomes a joke even if it was a serious matter. Durring the same time span Pakistan Upgraded all F16 to Block 52+ standard and aquired 18 new block 52+.

To be honest Unless Stealth Aircraft comes into picture then there is nothing for India to gloat about any more.

.
There is not much TOT to offer in the gripen as it is a modular fighter with diverse components...very much like LCA and JF17.

. .
We already manufacture Su 30, as you do jf-17.

Yet not a dime gets exported..while Pakistan already has sucessfull export customers for MFI Super Mushak and K8-Karakoram trainer.

India to date does not have a single jet plane export be it indigenous or JV.

Recent orders of K-8 include: Egypt (118), Ghana (four), Myanmar (62), Namibia (12), Pakistan (55), China (200), Sri Lanka (six), Sudan (12), Tanzania (six), Zambia (eight) and Zimbabwe (11).

Venezuela ordered 18 K-8 aircraft in 2008. The first six were delivered in March 2010 and the remaining 12 in August 2010. Venezuela ordered 18 additional K-8s worth $82m in June 2010 to bring the total orders to 36.

Bolivia ordered six K-8P aircraft worth $58m in 2009 for anti-drug operations.

During that same time span in which you aquired 18 F16 52+ and upgraded rest of the f 16 fleet...
We aquired
222 Su 30Mki,
45 Mig 29K,
10 Mirage 2000

and started upgradation program of rest of Mig 29,Mirage 2000 fleet....

Dont stop at that Pakistan is also inducting JF Thunder Block 2 and soon upcoming Block 3. Who knows what we will have in our inventory by the time Rafales are inducted or even if they are inducted in our air force. SU 30 MKI remind me how many of them are grounded due to Technical issues? I think if you want to gloat then your 10 Mirage 2000 are far superior to any thing in your inventory at present date.

It will go up to the levels of Mirages and MIG 29s, especially after localizing of spare parts and maintenance by TATA.

Rafale will be another maintanance night mare if india is not getting TOT along with it. It takes years to have proper maintainance facilities. If you are talking about SU 30 then i think the issue is definitely lack of local manufacturing of spare parts and quality being imported from russia.

.
Rather than make 200 LCA, it makes more sense to make 120 LCA and 120 Grippen NG.

After all BOTH have American Engine. Grippen NG is Far more capable and proven and has a proud lineage. LCA should transition into AMCA without delay and let HAL fund any LCA evolution.
