Saab India Chairman offers Gripen E over MMRCA deal to India

Chairman of Saab India, Lars-Olof Lindgren in an Interview to StratPost, has told that Saab is willing to offer New Gripen E over MMRCA deal, Since even with MMRCA,LCA and FGFA, IAF will still have shortage of 200 light class aircrafts and Saab is willing to start joint Production in India , if India agrees . When asked if Saab has made any Proposal to Government of India , He said ” We have not offered our proposal yet , since we don’t want our proposal to be seen has a way to derail (MMRCA) or effect other projects (LCA TEJAS MK-2), Saab India Head also offered Co-Development of Next Generation fighter , which SAAB is planning. He didn’t clarify if he offered Help on India’s AMCA or on completely new 5th Generation fighter aircraft program .

Lindgren also informed that they have done ground work on Local Production facility and which vendors and suppliers will be roped in for Local Production of Gripen E . But He refused to name Local Private company which they will rope in if India does go for such purchase .

DRDO and Saab few years back almost opted for co development of Tejas MK-2 , Last DRDO chief, Dr V K Saraswat, was convinced that Saab’s assistance would be ideal for the Tejas programme. In 2012, DRDO sent Saab a “Request for Information” asking a rough estimate of costs, which Saab duly submitted. But after new DRDO chief, Dr Avinash Chander,

took charge saab was told India will go alone on Tejas MK-2 Project . Many in defence circles had advocated such collaboration since Tejas Mark II programme faces significant design challenges beyond merely fitting of a new engine. Gripen E too has new General Electric F-414 engine which Tejas MK-2 will have and Saab Expertise could have saved India few years of Research and Development cycle .

IDRW.org has confirmed that even though deal of Co-development seemed ideal and Practical and could have brought in much needed speed in the already long delayed LCA Tejas Program

, But Saab wanted 51% ownership in the New company which could mean Tejas MK-2 could have been a SAAB Product and gave them higher IPR and ownership over Tejas MK-2 which was not acceptable to Indian government and Air force. Saab wants to maintain 51 % or more, in share of the new company for Gripen E Production in India if it ever gets orders from Indian government . Saab Chairman offered much deeper Transfer of Technology ( TOT) for Gripen E to India , which will be much more then what MMRCA will bring in . He Applauded Modi’s Push for Foreign Direct Investment in Defence to 49 % and hoped bar will be further raised in near future and Indian Aerospace will continue to grow and will hit maturity in next 15 years

51% no thank you. FDI under any circumstances shall be raised to more than 49% in defence Industries within India.

Gripen NG fly away cost is 113 million $, LCA Mk-1 cost 33 million $ :angel:

well wait for LCA mk2 which will be below $50M , which will be still cheaper than JAS-39 NG lol

By the time Mk2 comes at 50 mil $, JAS will cost 150 mil $. By all standards, Grippen will be 3 times more expensive than LCA. So really SAAB has no chance except pitch for a joint program for AMCA.

Later they have shown ways to reduce flyaway cost. Also, if large numbers are manufactured in India, costs are bound to come down.

But even so, for such prices, Rafale might be the better value for money. Suddenly the Rafale deal seems to be looking to be not such a ripoff.

cost will not come down by half lol still will be around $80 million
