S Korean cargo ship Stellar Daisy vanishes in South Atlantic

A huge South Korean cargo ship which had 24 people on board has gone missing in the South Atlantic.

Two Filipino sailors found on a life raft were rescued, AFP reported, citing a Uruguayan navy spokesman.

On Friday, a crew member sent a text saying the 312m-long (1024ft) Stellar Daisy freighter was taking on water.

The Uruguayan navy alerted merchant ships in the area, which began a search. A navy spokesman said they had reported a strong smell of fuel.

Vessel sank in vicinity 34 04S 018 32W, some 350 nm northwest of Tristan Da Cunha Island, some 1800 nm north-north-west of Cape Town.

There’s no doubt that STELLAR DAISY sank, and little doubt that she sank after capsizing.
Nothing else could sink vessel, especially of such dimensions, in just several minutes. Latest findings confirm capsizing as the cause of sinking – other ships in the area, deployed in SAR, found a life raft with two seamen in it. Unconfirmed both found seamen are of Filipino nationality. Earlier reports said two lifeboats were spotted, but latest South Korean update said only one life raft was found. It coincides with capsize version. Most of the crew, in capsize disasters, couldn’t even make it to upper decks, caught in superstructure inside’s chaos. Life rafts are semi-detachable and semi-inflamed, they’re actually, the only survival hope of those few who manage to leave capsized vessel.

Search operation for missing S. Korean cargo ship in S. Atlantic continues: gov't

SEOUL, April 3 (Yonhap) -- Search efforts for 22 crew members of a South Korean cargo ship that apparently sank in the South Atlantic last week are making little headway after two sailors were rescued Saturday, a government official said Monday.

The search for the missing South Korean ship, the Stellar Daisy, began Saturday, one day after the ship's crew sent a text to their South Korean employer, saying their ship was taking on water. The Marshall Islands-flagged ship, carrying eight South Korean and 16 Filipino sailors, was sailing off Uruguay when it made the distress call, according to South Korea's foreign ministry.

Dispatched by the Brazilian government, a C-130 aircraft of the Brazilian Air Force on Sunday searched inside a 500-kilometer radius area, including the scene and a point where the two Filipino crew were picked up in a raft, but it detected only fuel and debris believed to have come from the ship without finding other missing sailors, the official said.

The government will have a Brazilian Navy's destroyer and merchant ships of Polaris Shipping, the crew members' South Korean employer continue the search and rescue operation.

The Brazilian destroyer equipped with a rescue helicopter is expected to reach the scene as early as Tuesday, with Polaris Shipping's three merchant ships to arrive by early Tuesday.

The 266,000-ton Stella Daisy with 260,000 tons of ore loaded, departed a port in Brazil on March 26 for China. The very large ore carrier is believed to have sunk on Friday after filling with water.
