Korean, Japanese FMs Meet in New York

Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida met for talks in New York on Thursday.

It was the first meeting between senior officials from the two countries after months of icy relations, possibly triggered by an official message President Park Geun-hye received from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last week.

The letter was delivered by former Japanese prime minister Yoshiro Mori, who was visiting Korea for the opening ceremony of the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon last Friday. Abe expressed hope of meeting Park "on the sidelines of an international conference to be held in autumn."

Yun and Kishida reportedly touched on the issue of Korean women who were forced into sexual slavery by the imperial Japanese Army in World War II. Yun reiterated Korea's position that Japan should take responsibility and compensate them.

In her keynote address at the UN General Assembly Wednesday, Park criticized Japan indirectly, saying sexual violence against women during war is "inhumane" and violates human rights.
