A general view shows a mosque named after the Prophet Mohammed, the largest in Europe according to local authorities, during an inauguration ceremony in the Chechen town of Shali, Russia August 23, 2019.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Authorities in the Russian region of Chechnya on Friday inaugurated what they said was the largest mosque in Europe in a pomp-filled ceremony attended by local and foreign officials.

Named after the Prophet Mohammed, the marble-decorated mosque has capacity for more than 30,000 people and has been described by the Chechen authorities as the “largest and most beautiful” mosque in Europe.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, an ally of President Vladimir Putin, said the mosque — located in Shali, a town of 54,000 just outside the regional capital Grozny — was “unique in its design, and majestic in its size and beauty”.

The mosque’s grounds, planted with flowers and sprinkled with fountains, can host an additional 70,000 worshippers, local authorities said.

Kadyrov, who was appointed by Putin to rule the Muslim-majority region in 2007, has spearheaded a revival of Islam in Chechnya, including by building opulent mosques.

In 2008 he unveiled the “Heart of Chechnya”, a mosque with a capacity of 10,000 worshippers in Grozny, a city that had been ravaged by two wars between Moscow and separatists after the 1991 break-up of the Soviet Union.

Kadyrov has been criticized by rights groups for widespread rights abuses in the region, allegations he denies.

His supporters credit him with bringing relative calm and stability to a region dogged for years by a simmering insurgency.

. . .
This is why the Russian approach to “manage” its muslims will work versus that currently being undertaken by China.

Still, there will be some men who would stand against these oppressive regimes, not letting them settle into their lands. In the long run, this fire will keep simmering and world will keep labelling them as terrorists.

What Russia did was simple, it knew is was facing endless, needless war which could spread so it talked to the Chechens, sought out the faction it could most deal with and in return for loyalty to Moscow it funded and supported checniya

And gave the Chechens full autonomy in their faith and culture

In one act they ended the call for separation

The mistake the Chinese are making is that they are trying to make a copy of one Chinaman 1.4 billion times and all they are doing is spreading resentment and resistance

The Indians are trying something similar, during a period where India is turning extremist Hindu, they are forcing a Muslim majority state into a union full of Hindus which the Kashmiris hate and telling the Kashmiris that Kashmir will be swamped by crazy bakhts

Kadyrov is a disgusting and brutal tyrant. Putin is afraid of these guys because the last time they went to war with them they conducted many terrorist attacks in Russia.

So Putin - out of fear and pragmatism - gives Kadyrov control of his region and ignores his numerous corruption schemes and barbaric rule in exchange for Kadyrov quelling calls for separatism.

Regardless, this is a very beautiful Mosque.

Absolutely gorgeous!

Both the structure and the landscaping!

It must be so serene to pray in there.

Russian muslims would die in war for Russia.
Chinese muslims would die in war against China. (even ethnic Chinese despise PRC and fight against it, just look at HK).

That is biggest difference.
That is reality in 21th century. Sadly.

My brother @vostok , do you know about Timur Mucuraev? Chechen bard, famous poet and singer during both Chechen wars. Even, if he is, or probably was Chechen nationalist, his songs in Russian language is second only to Vladimir Visocki, absolute terrific.

Hi, bro. I've never heard about that singer.
I do not think all Muslims in China are the same as Uighurs. In Soviet times during WW2 people from all Muslim republics fought heroically for Soviet Motherland. Only Crimean Tatars and Chechens were seen in mass betrayal - it does not mean all of them were traytors, but the percent of collabortianists was much higher than in other nations. I think most Muslims in China will fight for China.
