Lena, sewer"

Blowing up Russia's inflatable army

The Russian military has come up with an inventive way to deceive the enemy and save money at the same time: inflatable weapons.

They look just like real ones: they are easy to transport and quick to deploy.

You name it, the Russian army is blowing it up: from pretend tanks to entire radar stations.

The decoys are a hundred times cheaper than the real thing, which means Moscow will save a lot of money by blowing up its own weapons.

On the edge of Moscow, two men carry a black duffle bag into a field, then drop it on the ground.

When they open the bag, they take out a large sheet of plastic. It looks like a tent or a tarpaulin.

In fact, it's the Russian army's latest strategic weapon. It doesn't need ammunition - just air.

On goes the pump, in goes the air and the plastic sheet begins to rise and take shape.

A turret appears, then out pops a long plastic gun barrel. This is an inflatable Russian tank.
State-of-the-art

When the men pump up their next piece of plastic, this one expands into a S-300 rocket launcher, complete with giant truck and inflatable rockets. It is a cross between a ballistic missile and a bouncy castle.

And waiting to be blown up are inflatable MiG fighter jets - even entire Russian radar stations.

These state-of-the-art stand-ins are among the most advanced military decoys in the world.

What they lack in firepower, they make up for in flexibility: they are light and can be deployed quickly to deceive the enemy.

They are also very realistic. They are made of a special material that tricks enemy radar and thermal imaging into thinking they are real weapons.

The inflatables are stitched together at a former hot-air balloon factory.

"I'm proud to be making entire rocket-launchers and tanks for our armed forces," says Lena, who is stitching a surface-to-air missile system.

"When you finish sewing them and you watch them being filled with air, it's so satisfying."

Wait a minute.....didn't India recently order over 250 fighter Jets from Russia ?????

The comment and the article have no connection.

actually, the Russian ploy is pure brilliance. Imagine the enemy firing ATGMS, HARMS etc at inflatable balloons, and wasting millions of dollars of equipment. Also, these can be used to intimidate the enemy, like Rommel did with mock panzers in North Africa.

Yes 250 REAL fighters. We'll make the balloons ourselves ;) so u never know which one is real. MWAAHAHAHAHA

^^^^
Not to mention giving up their position. The real weapons (like MBT) could be hidden from direct view and once the enemy is exposed they could attack them.

.
hey i think those rd-33 might b these inflamable baloons.

:)

Good job russia.

Wooo Russians are so ingenious.Imagine enemy seeing entire tank columns coming the physiological factor.

And more one could even hide real ones between fakes so if enemy gets one or 2 fakes forcing him to either blow everyone up or face the risk of real ones hiding in between.

.
And sure usa might save some $$$$ on those war on terror goodies-- mi-171 etc.-- to some of its so called allies.

The Russian are progressing where the Americans failed. i.e in terms of opportunity costs.

There was criticism of USA military for using expensive weapons on targets of insignificant value.

There was once a report that a Tomahawk missile was fired and resulted in deaths of a mere 3-6 Talibans.(not sure)

Reminds of the famous anecdote, where Americans spent a fortune developing a pen that could be used to write in space, the Russians cleverly used a pencil instead.

I remember hearing a comedy on CNN or BBC like President Bush wouldn't want to waste a million dollar missile but hitting a camel's @$$.:D

Only fools would fall for those inflatable blow-up Dolls.

The Russian must think that Westerners are dumb but the opposite is true.

Those Russian Blow-up Dolls can fool nobody but the Russians themselves.

The truth might be that the Russian Government is ripping off Russian tax payer's money with those inflatables instead of real hardwares.
