Video: Ukraine Separatists Try To Crank Up WWII Tank
by Brendan McGarry on June 9, 2014

Separatists in eastern Ukraine are trying to crank up a 1943-vintage Soviet tank that was part of a World War II memorial in their fight for an independent republic linked to Russia, according to Russian news outlets.

For decades, the IS-3 tank has been sitting on a stone pedestal as a monument in the town of Kostiantynivka, the Russian ITAR-Tass news agency reported last week. (The “IS” stands for the late Soviet dictator Joseph, or Iosif, Stalin.)

The press agency of the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic said that “Our craftsmen have managed to start the engine of the IS-3 tank displayed on a platform in a park,” ITAR-Tass said. “The tank is being prepared and will engage in combat soon.”

Videos of the startup circulating on YouTube suggested that the 12-cylinder, 520-horsepower engine might need some work before it can rumble off the park’s pedestal. The engine screeched and strained, belching out clouds of black smoke before it was shut down.

The IS-3 features a 122mm cannon and in its heyday could do about 22 mph an hour on paved roads, ITAR-Tass said.

.
werent you the one who said its Russian troops?

. . . .
you said they are supported by the kremnlin, so why do they need do such stuff if they are paid by russia?

Vladis' abandoning them. The nutsack didn't think it through and now he's pooping his pantalones.

By that logic one could say the same thing about US troops. Whats the difference?

Try to be original and not a copycat, please.

You could have answered my point instead.

Seriously, the only reason you're taking the side you take is coz you were born in the US. Had you been born in russia, you would have been justifying russian interference to protect its 'national interests' just like the US govt often likes to say when jumping into other countries with guns blazing. My point is, you can fill up a thousand pages of this thread, with everyone just repeating 'we are right', 'no we are right'. Try to take a moral position instead so that there can be a more logical, conclusive discussion.

.
Next they'll be riding Lenin's corpse into battle ,lol.

Lenin, Marx, Uncle Joe.... looks like a formidable special ops team.

And if you'd been born in India.......

Valid point. You can bet i'd take a moral position. I don't believe in humans fighting amongst themselves just because there exist borders. In that case i would prefer no borders at all if that eliminates all the fighting. Btw what would you expect of me if i were to be born in India?

First of all, the IS-3 is late 1944/1945 vintage.

Real bad idea.

1.Likely to be destroyed, and is more important as a monument - Vandalism
2.Announcing the intention, is inviting a brace of Hinds to make a visit.

Only IF this is a trap to lure Ukrainan Air assets into an AA infested area, can releasing this video be considered smart.

Too early to judge Putin.
He should do what is best for Russian Citizens, not for Eastern Ukrainan citizens.
EU/US should continue make his illegal options less attractive.

Lol, oh man. It kind of reminds me of this scene when those old tripods come out of the ground cranked up for combat.

Welcome to Eastern Europe. After this, the catapult built by Maidan protestors a few months back,i'm surprised we didn't see both sides fighting in track suites and sneakers.

When I saw this in the news a few weeks back they said they were some mechanics fixing it up for fun, probably true as its stuck on a pedestal and hardly battle ready.

It repaired. They could not fix main caliber, but put a machine gun on top and thus used this tank in combat. If militias had a normal technique, they would long ago have won because their motivation and morale is much stronger than of Kiev occupiers.
