original xbox CPU is a Pentium 3 @733Mhz that's with one core, albeit it's driving 480p 576p or 720p displays at the time.

American chip makers are better. We all get it. Most of that can be attributed to x86. The point of this article is some Russian is also trying hard. With the World shifting towards less powerful, smaller and less power consuming solutions, many other newer chip manufacturers are also coming up. Elbrus can benefit from that. There is nothing "American" about chip making , bluechip which intel bought was german , and all Intel's top notch designers are non-american immigrants , the only american chip maker is AMD which is on par with the russian Elbo-Rus

Not a ground breaking development on any scale, but it sure takes a lot of effort to do even that. Also interesting thing to note, it supports two different instruction sets, one is x86 and another is something that they have developed.

I don't know why people stupidly turns technical discussing into politician arguments like this !
Anyways I think CPU developers introduce it to the world on very wrong way .
First they tried to run x86 architectural software on VLIW CPU , and the worst is putting game on that test .
As I heard this CPU is comparable to Intel itanium CPU with RISC instruction set .
to simplify how this could be super hard . most of you tried to run PlayStation 2 games using PCSX 2 emulator ,
as all know all Intel core i-7 were taken down trying to emulate (17 Yrs old 299 MHz processor ) because it's RISC games and you are trying to run it on CISC CPU !.
Did you know how complicated the different between dos e architectural , an x86 application Like Doom 3 BFG ( 2012 version not 2006 ) logically should nor run on RISC CPU since many of instruction set are not exist . if anyone tried before Assembly programming will know what's I'm taking about .
As I ses this CPU uses internal emulator to port x86 instruction into CPU core to process like RISC instruction (that's why we saw elbrus-4C not itanium running a x86 game ) , which is big achievements .
As I see this new x86 compatibly were put while they have in mind made this CPU for mainstream market .
I don't know how fare this CPU can run x86 with full horse power , but I know it's nearly 20%~60% max compatible since it's not native x86 CPU .
The chip owners had very big challenge to make consumers application available to it , either make easier tool compile/port app to Elbrus architectural , or develop their own run-time IDE (for programmers ) C/C++ libraries (including OpenGL etc ) drivers . which I see need effort 10 time more that CPU design can take . + they should make it available for export (if their any consumers version ) that will encourage more developers .
and I'm 100 sure M$ will not add it to their new win 10 architectural support (since they support arm now ) .
At last on software compatibility since I'm web developers I know theirs tiny hope from all programmers and CPU makers with JavaScript and it superb Cross platform run-time Node.JS it's yet full compatible but I was apple to make android and PC app using single JavaScript HTML5 app .
BTW someone wounder why Elbrus-4C made on this weird architectural ,well that's because this CPU comes after years of research of it older CPU's back to 1980's on USSR era .
Last I was very happy to someone else trying to make CPU again since all Japaneses(NEC/SONY) Taiwanese(VIA) get out the market for good .

Doom 3 BFG uses multiple cores while original Doom 3 does not, thus I am sure it would choke.on original Doom 3.

Be thankful to AMD as 8 core Russian CPU will be able to run latest games.

Graphics? No. Artstyle/Direction? Yes.

This russian CPU would choke on original Doom 3 or any intensive game that utilized only single core such as Far Cry and STALKER, also Battlefield 2.
