Russia: Watch authorities burn 20 TONNES of illegal EU meat

About 20 tonnes of smuggled meat and meat products produced in the European Union (EU) was destroyed over the weekend near the port city of Novorossiysk in the south of Russia.

The cargo of pork and poultry arrived in Novorossiysk on September 14 inside a truck, according to Russia's State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service. According to documents provided by the driver the cargo, travelling from Crimea to St. Petersburg, should have been sprat and frozen anchovies. However, customs inspectors discovered boxes containing meat produced in Belgium and the UK which is currently under an import ban.

In August, Moscow imposed a year-long embargo on meat, chilled fish, seafood, vegetables, fruits and dairy products from the EU member states, the U.S., Australia, Norway and Canada in response to sanctions against Russia.

I heard from a Polish guy that there's a lot of illegal trade now that these sanctions are in place. Pretty normal I guess, there's producers across a border and consumers within, business goes on, albeit with a lot more risk than before.

Destroying food was a stupid move, the state could have seized it and used it any other way it saw fit. Go after the smugglers, not the produce, this isn't cocaine.

That shows how much Putin cares for his people. The meat was already paid, the EU business made its profit from it.

Russia has very much poverty, Food prices rise high and many can´t afford quality meat or meat at all. A smart move would have been to give the meat to some of the countless kitchens that feed the many homeless people. But Putin gives a shit about russians. Like evry russian leader always gave a shit about his people.
