Russia wants to help Pakistan in energy sector

KARACHI: Russian Federation's Ambassador to Pakistan , Alexey Y. Dedov here on Thursday said that his country wanted to help Pakistan in energy sector as it is facing shortage of energy.
The Ambassador , in his interactive meeting with members of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( KCCI) at the Chamber office, informed that a high profile trade delegation of Russia will visit Karachi soon. Russian Consul General at Karachi, Oleg Avdeev and a team of other officials of Russian mission in Pakistan accompanied him.

He said that many Russian companies are serious to participate in Russia's 'single country' exhibition in Pakistan scheduled in the middle of September 2014, to market their products. The Russian Ambassador said that the ties between Russian Federation and Pakistan are based on principles. His country is keen to increase cooperation and trade with Pakistan.

The total bilateral trade figures dollars 550 million which does not correspond to the big potentials of both the countries. He urged that joint business councils and the trade bodies in both the countries should play their roles in boosting the bilateral trade and investment through exchange of delegations and business related information, and increasing business-to- business contacts.

" For us , Pakistan is a very important venture," he acknowledged.

Russian Ambassador expressed his satisfaction and hoped that the inter-governmental commission including Pakistan and Russian Finance Ministers for promoting bilateral trade and investment, and mutual cooperation would prove beneficial for both the countries. To a query about any role of Russian Federation was going to play in revival and expansion of Pakistan Steel Mills, the Ambassador said that Pakistan government should first define the PSM's future. Then, we would consider and plan for any support. " We should know the fate of Pakistan Steel," he remarked.

Alexey Y. Dedov welcomed the dialogue between United States and Iran on the nuclear issue and said the settlement would be helpful for peace in the region. To a question from former president KCCI , Majyd Aziz , the Director at Russian Mission in Pakistan looking after education issues said that his country is supporting Pakistani students seeking eduction there. However, Pakistani students would have to sign agreement with their respective universities/institutions besides fulfilling all required legal formalities.

KCCI's President Aamir Abdullah Zaki highlighted the role of Karachi Chamber in promoting trade and industry within and outside the country. It has always been campaigning for the transfer of technology and increase in investments between Pakistan and Russia for the fast growth of both the economies.

He said Russia can invest in Pakistan's potential areas of oil and gas, communication, irrigation, atomic energy, transport and infrastructure. Senior Vice President KCCI , Muffasir Atta Malik and Vice President KCCI Muhammad Idress also attended the meeting.

I agree Russia wants to improve relationship, its Pakistan which is fixated on Americans. Its Pakistan that needs to improve relations with Russia for its own security and for geopolitics.

This is a golden opportunity for Pakistan. Russia has started to look more to the east than the West, and Pakistan should highlight itself as a perfect corridor for Russian investment.
Gawadar and Karachi are perfectly placed for both Western China and Central Russia to use.
