Mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin vowed to stop 'evil' by Russia's military elite
Thomson Reuters · Posted: Jun 23, 2023 5:50 PM EDT | Last Updated: 35 minutes ago

Russia accused mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin of calling for an armed mutiny on Friday after he alleged, without providing evidence, that the military leadership had killed 2,000 of his fighters and vowed to stop what he called its "evil."

As a long-running standoff between him and the Defence Ministry appeared to come to a head, the ministry issued a statement, saying Prigozhin's accusations were "not true and are an informational provocation."

Prigozhin said his actions did not amount to a military coup. But Russia's FSB security service opened a criminal case against him for calling for an armed mutiny, the TASS news agency said on Friday, citing the National Anti-terrorism Committee.
The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin had been informed and that "necessary measures are being taken."

The standoff, many of the details of which remained unclear, looked like the biggest domestic crisis Putin has faced since he sent thousands of troops into Ukraine in February last year in what he called "a special military operation."

Prigozhin, whose frequent tirades on social media belie his limited role in the war as head of the Wagner private militia, has for months been openly accusing Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russia's top general, Valery Gerasimov, of rank incompetence and of denying his forces ammunition and support.

But earlier on Friday, he had appeared to cross a new line in his increasingly vitriolic feud with the Defence Ministry, saying that the Kremlin's rationale for invading Ukraine was based on lies concocted by the army's top brass.

Then, in a series of late evening audio messages on his official Telegram channel, Prigozhin said: "The minister of defence has ordered 2,000 bodies that are being stored to be hidden so as not to show the losses."

He added: "Those who destroyed our lads, who destroyed the lives of many tens of thousands of Russian soldiers, will be punished. I ask that no one offer resistance ... There are 25,000 of us and we are going to figure out why chaos is happening in the country."

Prigozhin said his actions were "not a military coup," but added: "Most of the military support us fervently."

Early on Saturday local time, Prigozhin said in a Telegram post his men had crossed border from Ukraine into southern Russia and were ready to go "all the way" against the Russian military. He said he and his men would destroy anyone who stood in their way.

Russian military leaders also took to social media in a bid to control the narrative. The deputy commander of Russia's Ukraine campaign, Gen. Sergei Surovikin, told Wagner fighters to obey Putin, accept Moscow's commanders and return to their bases. He said political deterioration would play into the hands of Russia's enemies.

"I urge you to stop," Surovikin said in a video posted on Telegram, his right hand resting on a rifle.

Unverified video
An unverified video posted on a Telegram channel close to Wagner showed a scene in a forest where small fires were burning and trees appeared to have been broken by force. There appeared to be one body, but no more direct evidence of any attack.

It carried the caption: "A missile attack was launched on the camps of PMC [private military company] Wagner. Many victims. According to eyewitnesses, the strike was delivered from the rear, that is, it was delivered by the military of the Russian Ministry of Defence."

Moscow's National Anti-Terrorism Committee said that, following Prigozhin's statements, the Federal Security service (FSB) had "initiated a criminal case based on calls for an armed rebellion," the state news agency RIA Novosti reported.

The U.S. says the Wagner Group is a transnational criminal organization. Here's why
"We demand that illegal actions be stopped immediately," the committee added.

Wagner spearheaded Russia's capture of the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut last month, and Prigozhin has used its battlefield success, achieved at enormous human cost, to publicly criticize Moscow with seeming impunity - until now.

But on Friday he for the first time dismissed Putin's core justifications for invading Ukraine on Feb. 24 last year.

"The war was needed ... so that [Defence Minister Sergei] Shoigu could become a marshal ... so that he could get a second 'Hero' [of Russia] medal," Prigozhin said in a video clip. "The war wasn't needed to demilitarize or denazify Ukraine."

Marat Gabidullin, a former Wagner commander who moved to France when Russia invaded Ukraine, told Reuters that Wagner's fighters were likely to stand with Prigozhin.

"We have looked down on the army for a long time.... Of course they support him, he is their leader," he said.

"They won't hesitate [to fight the army], if anyone gets in their way."

Rumors on reddit that a Russian military base is struck. Russia has shut down local internet services.
Heard the same thing. Things seem to be heating up.

This doesn't seem like a mutiny, this seems like an out right coup attempt.

"Just now, on the Rostov-Moscow highway, in the area of the settlement of the Cossack camps, the first clash occurred between the advanced groups of the Wagner PMC, moving towards Moscow, and the Russian Guard units As a result of the skirmish, the National Guard fled, leaving their weapons and several armored personnel carriers, and the column of private military officers under the command of Dmitry Utkin continued to move towards Moscow."

So it IS a coup attempt. Taking Moscow means taking Russian central command. Putin and his loyalists can probably move to another major city, but if they lose Moscow, Putin's legitimacy will end.

People seems to forget Wagner is a PMC, they aren't regular Russian formation. As much as I know PMC (I once ALMOST joined KBR and do intel work for them) is that PMC cares about only one thing. - Money

The problem for Wagner is, as long as they are deployed to Ukraine and fight the war for Russia, they cannot sell their service to third party, I read somewhere Wagner is losing 20-50 millions dollars of contract from these oversea works since the war begin, and in the beginning, I am pretty sure Prigozhin is compensated by Putin, but ask yourself this question. Would Russia have the money and resource to hire a PMC and fight war for them for 15 months paying 5-7 times the money normal Russian soldier get? This is not using Blackwater a few month here and there doing convoy work or sercurity work, this is regular fighting, this is combine assault, this is the big war. It is going to cost 10-20 times what US hiring Blackwater, or G4S becuase you are using them for high tempo, high intensity fighting.

I would think Russian money run dry for Wagner when they have to recruit from prison but then there are just that many prisoner you can recruit and they are probably going to be looping out all of them already. Which mean I would image Wagner is REALLY short staffed at this moment. And when you are short staffed, you taken out deployment, for normal army, that's A-OK, but for PMC, no deployment = no money. That's a big deal.

So I would say, part of it is Prigozhin playing games, and part of this is really because it hamper Prigozhin make money.

This seems like a plan to disband Wagner.

What some experts are saying is that Wagner is a creation of GRU and all the officers belong to the regular Russian army. It’s fully in the control of the Russian military and they’re not going to start a war on Russia.

Either Prigozhin did this with Putin’s consent or, if not, he’s going to be liquidated or jailed.

Well, Metal Gear Solid 2 is indeed about the US President trying to false flag the US government and cleanse house, and the player character is sent by the US Deep state to kill him...

Now let's just replace US with Russia.
