Jf 17 is a third generation fighter original name MIG 33 old technology. In modern day it will be easily taken out by any plane why would they waste money

Why should they go for JF-17? When they can get SU-35 which is better.... China is not good with radar tec or engine/Air craft.


So the SU-35 is better than the Mig 29 Variant so why go for the lower M29, su35 has very good radar..

They are not going for the Mig-29 per se, this will be the base for the new light 5th generation fighter..

Russia and UAE to start working on 5th generation fighter by 2018

Russia and the United Arab Emirates will get down to joint work on a future light 5th generation jet on the basis of MiG-29 as of 2018, the chief of Russia’s Rostec corporation, Sergey Chemezov, told the media on Feb. 20.

"We believe we shall start working on this plane as of next year. It will take seven to eight years to develop," Chemezov said on the sidelines of the international weapons show IDEX-2017.

"A future fifth generation plane will be created on the basis of Russia’s Mig-29," he added.

Earlier, Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said that Russia and the UAE had concluded an agreement on industrial cooperation in military engineering, which enabled them to launch a fifth generation fighter project.

The head of the United Aircraft Corporation Yuri Slyusar said the work on the plane was at the initial phase and Russia was in the process of drafting proposals. The UAC would participate in the project as the leader organization, and Sukhoi and MiG as co-contributors.

Russia's Rostec to co-develop 5th-gen fighter with UAE

Russia defense heavyweight Rostec will partner with the UAE Ministry of Defence to co-develop a fifth-generation light combat fighter, company CEO Sergey Chemezov said at IDEX in Abu Dhabi Monday.

Development, which is based upon its MiG-29 twin-engine fighter aircraft, will kick off in 2018, and will take an estimated seven to eight years, Chemezov said during a media briefing with journalists. He elaborated in an exclusive one-on-one interview with Defense News

That’s not fast, because it takes quite a long period of time to develop,” he said speaking through a translator. “We anticipate local production here in the Arab Emirates, for the needs of Emirates. And of course [we expect development to support the needs of] the neighbouring countries."

Details about how the partnership would be structured have not been finalized, though Chemezov said it could potentially function as a joint venture between the company and UAE or UAE's domestic suppliers.

I doubt that UAE has the scientific and industrial capabilities to really "co-develop" a 5th gen stealth fighter.

Apparently they have and working on the scientific capabilities..and will work on the industrial part of it too.. the project will take 10 years from conception to production, they will have ample time to learn more, and prepare the production facilities.. do not forget that they are joining an experienced partner Russia..

The US did not pledge that ever, there was no demand from the GCC for the F-35, and UAE will get it in around 2025, because it is a medium weight 5th G not a light weight 5th G like the one the UAE will co-produce with Russia..
