Russia to review 1991 decision to recognise independence of Baltic states - watch on - uatoday.tv

Estonia, Latvia and Lithunia were occupied by Soviet Union for decades

Russia is examing the legality of recognition of the independence of the Baltic republics by the State Council of the USSR according to Russia's state news service Interfax.

The decision to review recognition of the indepednence of EU-member Baltic nations follows the Prosecutor General's Office ruling last year that Crimea was illegally handed to Ukraine in 1954, and is certain to alarm the small Baltic Nato-member nations of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

In recent months Nato has held as series of meetings about how to address the threat from Russia and reassure Baltic countries that NATO is prepared to defend them. In June Poland and Lithuania confirmed that discussions were underway for the US to base heavy military weapons in warehouses across the Baltic states.

Speaking during a trip to Lithuania in June Europe NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Phillip M. Breedlove said Russia's next steps were unpredicatble and dangerous.

"We cannot fully be certain what Russia will do next, and we cannot fully grasp Putin's intent but what we can and are doing is learning from his actions. In addition what we see suggests growing Russian capabilities, significant military modernisation and ambitious strategic intent."

"In the east, Russia is blatantly attempting to change the rules and principles that have been the foundation of European security for decades. This challenge that's posed by resurgent Russia is global, not regional, and is enduring, not temporary."

The US has led a series of major NATO military drills in eastern Europe over the course of 2015 involving thousands of British, American and other allied forces.

Also in June Pentagon officials revealed a plan to base hundreds of battle tanks, high-caliber weapons and as many as 5,000 troops in the region - as a reposte to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and threat to NATO member states in eastern Europe.

The move would be the first time Washington has stationed heavy military equipment in the newer NATO member states that were once under Moscow's control.

And in these 2 sentences you have the essence.
My god , speaking of alternate reality.

.
And EU/NATO's reaction? Russia should make a go for the baltics, West won't react. If it does it will mean nuclear war as Russia can't repel US air power.

What's so special about US air power? Can't even beat ISIS let alone Russia.

Perhaps the Russians should start with a review of the legality of the occupation of the Baltic states first?

The Baltic states,[6][7] the United States[8][9] and its courts of law,[10] the European Parliament,[11][12][13] the European Court of Human Rights[14] and the United Nations Human Rights Council[15] have all stated that these three countries were invaded, occupied and illegally incorporated into the Soviet Union under provisions[16] of the 1939 Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, first by the Soviet Union, then by Nazi Germany from 1941 to 1944, and again by the Soviet Union from 1944 to 1991.[17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24] This policy of non-recognition has given rise to the principle of legal continuity, which holds that de jure, or as a matter of law, the Baltic states had remained independent states under illegal occupation throughout the period from 1940 to 1991.[25][26][27]

And then what? Take Finland?

Do you have any consideration for the wishes of the Lithuanians, Estonians and Latvians? And, if you don't, why should anyone have any consideration for other nation's wishes. I.e. you can stop complaining about the US, the West, the EU, China, and what have you..

Here only is the problem because its like violation of soveriginity and territorial intergity of Independent nations.

NATO Response force is already active and on that heavy weapons are going to be stationed soon and NATO Command needs less than 48 hours to act with full Force.

Soldiers of the 4t Infantry Division of the United States deployed in Lithuania for combined training will carry out training flights by U.S. UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters early in the morning of July 5, Sunday, over the Lithuanian regions of Utena, Panevėžys, Šiauliai, Kaunas and Alytus. The crews will take off from the Gediminas Headquarters Battalion in Kairiūkštis str., Vilnius.

Case of ISIS is different because its like a civil war among the baathists soldiers but in case of any invasion of any baltic states by Russian Federation means open war.

Ukraine type of excuse cant be used in case of Baltics.

Lol this man Putin is gonna keep NATO busy all the time :yahoo:

All the major powers have their economy based on weapon sales...This could be the reason the Russians are trying to gain some deals... But if we consider this then will Russia would not be the one selling their weapons but the NATO members to those countries that are going to be potentially be retaken.

So what do you think is this news really true or just a propaganda to sell weapons by NATO members ?

Guys, this is just an analysis of legal procedures. It is not redrawing of boundaries or something like that.
Purely from the point of view of jurisprudence.

Haha smartassa .. so without reading it you couldn't preview what's actually going on and call me foolish? Go read something else and get more smart here.
