Moscow - Russia wants to upgrade equipment at a early-warning radar facility in Azerbaijan because of Iran's increasing capacity to launch a long-range missile, Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said Friday.
'We need this station and we want to modernise it,' Serdyukov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying. 'In no small part we want to do this so we can watch the Iranian (missile) programme.'
Speaking in Moscow, Serdyukov said Russia was modernising its national air defences, and that a monitoring site rented by Russia near the Azerbaijan town of Gabala was a critical link in that early-warning network.
Russia pays Azerbaijan 14 million dollars a year to rent the Gabala site. Talks are in progress for a lease renewal, with Baku wanting to raise the rent and Moscow suggesting the rate stay the same in return for a smaller installation.
Missile defence is a contentious issue between Russia and NATO, which has announced plans to set up a missile shield in Europe to protect the region from a possible strike from the Middle East, and Iran in particular.
Moscow has said the planned European missile shield would threaten Russia's nuclear deterrent force, and has suggested NATO and Russia operate their air defence networks jointly, incorporating data collected from far-flung Russian early-warning installations like Gabala.

I always said we cannot trust those snakes. they are bunch of backstabbers.
dont forget how they armed iraq during our war and supported their use of chemical weapons.

. . . .
first let's see if it ever becomes a reality before bashing Russia ;) Moscow has been under our missiles coverage since many years ago, I believe this news signals something else rather than what it says explicitly.

I am not going to bash Iran here, since Armenian-Iranian people have good relationship, but lets be realistic here what the hell are you guys going to do to Russia ? launch missiles at a country that has the largest nuclear arsenal on earth, not too metion their Army, Navy, Air-force is only second to the US.

Remember one thing a Iranian-Russian war is Israeli wet dream.

Hey, 23 years of being Iranian has thought me that overconfidence will get you places lmao
This is something we Iranians don't lack of.

But in all seriousness, the Russians can never be trusted. They could be selling you submarines one day and invading you the next.

But, 20 years of being an Armenian has thought me that too much overconfidence can lead to disaster.

The saudis are trolls but these snakes can actually do some damage.

"Don'e know your enemy and Don't know yourself find defeat in every battle, Don't know the enemy but know yourself find victory and defeat in equal measures, Know your enemy and know yourself find victory in every battle"

Apparently you don't know your enemy and your arrogance means you don't know yourself either, Good luck in your life times.

The "over-confidence is bad, having ambitions is good" theory has no room for the whole "self fulfilling prophecy" thing. In my own life I've realized that you can affect people's mindsets by drilling something into their heads until they believe you. On a much bigger scale this is also true. We're (the Iranian nation) blocking the world's one and only hyper power through over-confidence and self belief. Stronger nations have been forced to bow down to them simply because they were mentally inferior.

Edit: wow that was some philosophical ****

I don't think Russia is doing this because they feel negative about Iran. Remember it is essential that you always are prepared for the worst case scenario, hence Russia has to take certain precautions as a great power. In the end you never really know the intentions of your friends/enemies.

All in all, it pretty neat that Iran stands strong even though they are surrounded by great dangers. In this world you either become an independent power with nuclear capabilities or follow a great power. If not you will either be subdued or invaded. In this case, Iran won't get subdued by other great powers, so they want to stand on their own feet, which in my opinion is respectable.
