Russia to help modernize N.Korean railways - News - NHK WORLD - English
Oct. 22, 2014 - Updated 09:28 UTC+2
Russia has agreed to help modernize 3,500 kilometers of North Korea's railways at a cost of 25 billion dollars over the next 20 years.

Russia's Minister of Far East Development, Alexander Galushka, made the agreement with North Korea's Foreign Trade Minister Ri Ryong Nam in a ceremony at a Pyongyang train station on Tuesday.

The Russian side said the project will help expand bilateral ties.

In July, Russia built a coal export terminal in North Korea's Rason special economic zone as an outlet for Russian resources to Asia and elsewhere.

Observers say Russia aims to strengthen ties with Asian countries to offset the cooling of its relations with the West over Ukraine.
