MOSCOW: Russia's defence ministry will dispose of four million obsolete guns and rifles, mainly AK-47s, by 2015.

According to Russian daily Izvestia, a source in the defence industry said that out of 16 million guns accumulated at military warehouses, 6.45 million were worn out.

First Deputy Defence Minister Alexander Sukhorukov said in September last year that the ministry possessed 17 million Kalashnikovs.

Analysts say the number of guns in storage was excessive for Russia's military forces that account for one million servicemen.

The AK-47 is the most widely used and well-known assault rifle in the world. It is used by armies of some 50 countries, as well as by countless guerrilla movements.

In January, Russia's largest firearms manufacturer, Izhmash, unveiled a prototype of its new Kalashnikov assault rifle designed to replace the outdated guns.

The new rifle -- dubbed AK-12 -- is being designed as a basic platform for the development of nearly 20 different modifications of the weapon. It could also be adapted for cartridges of different sizes.

NO they shouldn't.

Tell them I will take all of them. Free of charge, i'll arrange transport as well, why burden yourself with costs of disposal.

I don't think there will be nya gun in the future that will be admired like ak 47 and its derivatives.

Good, AK-47's are pretty old school now.

Expect some more freedom movements, clan/tribal wars, insurgencies all over the world.

That is certainly a possibility. As it is the AKs have always been the weapon of choice of insurgents/terrorists the world over.
