Russia to build 12 nuclear-powered Leader destroyers | Defense Update:

The Navy of Russia intends to order 12 advanced Leader destroyers. A half of them will be designed for the Northern Fleet, and another half – for the Pacific Fleet, officials with the Defense Ministry of Russia said. The lead ship of the new class will join the Russian Navy not earlier than in 2023-2025.

The Leader will be presented in two versions – with a nuclear powerplant and gas turbine power generating units.

For the time being, the Leader is not included on the state armaments program before 2020. Its construction will be carried out under the shipbuilding program that runs through 2050. The works on the project are to start next year.

The Severnoye Design Bureau has been given the engineering design preparation assignment; it plans to launch the work in 2015

I wonder if their budget can support such an expansion with a declining economy? Not only are new ships costly, but over the long-term nuclear powered ships are very, very expensive, especially during mid-life reactor maintenance. Cost, and a shift towards alternative fuels, was the reason the USN has not built a nuclear cruiser since the Long Beach Class. I support a return of the nuclear ship to the high seas, but only if done right and the Russians have a problem with this caveat.

In fact, Russia / Soviet Union for many decades using nuclear propulsion systems for nuclear icebreakers as well as " Kirov" cruisers. And they work pretty well.

you can only print like the US if you are the one with the world reserve currency, and even there its not unlimited.

Russia has ambitious projects planned, but itll cost a ton of money, im not sure they have it, even if its planned for the 2020s, heck, just the carriers they want will cost more than most national defence budgets, then there is the open question of technical skills

if it was, the soviet union would have never bankrupted itself trying to compete in an arms race with washington

and sure domestic is cheaper than imports but building carrier fleets and its associated escorts on top of other projects are still prohibitively expensive. and no you cant just print more money, that leads to hyper-inflation and the general crash of the economy.

Exactly. I mean, it's great that Russia has ambitions, but looking at the speed of building of several projects, especially projects regarding ships, hasn't been implemented according to what Russia was projecting a few years back..

Gorskhov frigate has barely been sorted out now. Or still not sorted out actually as it has to be officially commitioned into service, sometimes next year.
So I am wondering more about how many Gorskhov frigates, Russian Navy will have by 2020. My guess is 8.

Everything else such as this new destroyer, brings too much uncertainty. The economy has slowed down due to sanctions, and I don't know where they will find funding for this as Russia is spending 4,2% of its GDP on weapons already.

I feel like there are too many ships, with different logistics and overhaul demands, while consisting in with a very low numbers.

For example 2 Kirov cruisers in 2018. Then hopefully 2 Mistral by 2016 ? Then 7 or 8 Gorskhov by 2020. Kirov and Mistral will be expencive to maintain.

Personally I think it's strange that 2nd Kirov has been selected to receive "refurbishment", as I would rather try to speed up production of Gorskhovs.

Anyway, we won't know for sure what will be bought between 2020 - 2025 as those plans will be revealed next year, I think.

It's important to remember that, the more ships you have, the higher maintenance costs - especially if there is several different classes. So you need to have an economic "muscle" in order to keep that afloat and ready for combat.

If that was the case, china, India, Turkey, Japan, Brazil, Mexico etc will all be building as much aircraft carriers(why not say 10 at least each) as they want, and all will be spending as much(if not more than) as the U.S on defence, since it doesnt matter how much they spend, since Government just needs to pay employees, Employees build the ships,Employees return money to government as taxes,Cycle again and more ships.

Huh....i wonder why they are not all doing this, since it wont cost them anything?
