MOSCOW — A prospective Russian hypersonic missile has been successfully test-fired from a nuclear submarine for the first time, the military said Monday.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the Zircon missile was launched from the Severodvinsk submarine and hit a designated mock target in the Barents Sea.
The launch marked Zircon’s first launch from a submarine. It previously has been repeatedly test-fired from a navy frigate, most recently in July.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Zircon would be capable of flying at nine times the speed of sound and have a range of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). Putin has emphasized that its deployment will significantly boost Russian military capability.
Officials said Zircon’s tests are to be completed later this year and it will be commissioned by the Russian navy in 2022.
Zircon is intended to arm Russian cruisers, frigates and submarines. It is one of several hypersonic missiles under development in Russia.
The Kremlin has made modernizing the country’s arsenals a top priority amid the tensions with the West that followed Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula.


This new development didn't take a center stage as much as it should've. It seems as the Chinese fighter jet group sorties have taken the center stage. But this is a huge development. The Russians can now target Europe within a couple of minutes from subs deployed in the vicinity.

It is more about USA. Russia do not consider Europe as an enemy.

I believe the Russians on purpose have kept the range announcement to low (600 miles). If this is an operational system, I'd believe it's range is already around or above 1000 miles. Russians don't really have a big threat that they already can't counter within 600 Miles ranges.

For Pakistan, hypersonic is the need of the hour. The sooner the better, I've been writing all about it and acquiring SD-10 / SAM tech for Pakistan to mass produce. India's been setting up all 3 services with Brahmos in very large quantities and it leaves majority of the defenses useless due to it's supersonic speed and depressed trajectory.

The Tsirkon 3M-22 hypersonic missile is part of the 3K-22 (Code Zircon) complex, which NATO calls the SS-N-33. The missile can reach a speed of Mach 9 and fly at an altitude of 30-40 km where the range and speed increase as air resistance decreases. Experts estimate the payload of the missile at about 300-400 kg, and its length from 8 to 10 meters. The missile will be launched from 3S-14 vertical launchers on warships and submarines and from mobile Bastion coastal missile launchers.

During the Army 2021 Forum, the Russian Ministry of Defense signed a contract for the delivery of the Tsirkon hypersonic missiles to the Russian forces. According to Alexander Leonov, CEO of NPO Mashinostroenia, the contract must be fulfilled by 2025.

You are right. The Russian navy outside of a few handful\l of ships is essentially a training navy. They do have some formidable air crafts. But Russia with it's 15,000 nukes is essentially a nuke power. Not a true global power outside of that to fight any large scale conventional wars.

The Tsirkon missile systems would have much more range than the 600 miles announced. This has to be a prototype. The Russians make everything against the US and the US is much father than 600 miles range of this weapon.

I thought there was an air launched version too? Or may be they are working on it.

Good you are not part of Europe anymore, so your's regime propaganda does not matter for Europeans. We could save few Zircons for tiny island but I doubt it worth any modern weapon to conquer. Thousands of boats with migrants will deal with UK.

If you will study history you will see almost all countries had problems with all their neighbors in the past. And UK is the only country to worry about Russia cause UK is some sort part of the US, not Europe, so in real conflict it can be targeted as US territory. No European countries are enemies of Russia. And even if some country consider itself enemy of Russia - they will not attack us or our allies without US. So again - it is all about USA who want to be world bully with biggest gun. Russian gun is bigger and we can defend ourselves.

Shaheen missiles are already hypersonic at mid flight, mach 18. what we need are hypersonic sub launched missiles.

Where do you think Russia will be in terms of asserting it's role in the next 5-10 years (knowing India and China are bigger powers now, Turkey, Iran, KSA are trying to be regional powers) so the world's changing fast.

Where is Russia headed in the next decade militarily? And Tsirkon is limited to only 600 miles, why? This can't target the US, which is the purpose behind new weapon's development in Russia...
