Russia starts building new missile frigate for Indian Navy

KALININGRAD, June 11 (RIA Novosti) - The Yantar Shipyard in Russia's Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad will start on Wednesday the construction of the third Project 11356 frigate for the Indian Navy under a second contract, the company said.

India and Russia signed a contract for the purchase of three additional Project 11356 Krivak IV-class guided missile frigates for the Indian Navy on July 14, 2006. Russia previously built three Krivak-class frigates - INS Talwar, INS Trishul and INS Tabar - for India, and delivered them all by the end of 2004.

"The Yantar Shipyard will hold an official ceremony to mark the beginning of the construction of the third [Krivak-class] frigate for the Indian navy," a company spokesman said, adding that the work on the first two frigates was progressing according to schedule.

All three ships will be delivered to India by 2012. They will feature the BrahMos supersonic anti-ship cruise missile system instead of the Club-N/3M54TE missile system, which was installed on the previous frigates.

The Krivak-class frigate has deadweight of 4,000 metric tons and speed of 30 knots, and is capable of accomplishing a wide range of missions in the sea, primarily hunting down and destroying large surface ships and submarines.

The Indo-Russian alliance was born out of Soviet Union's desire for an ally in South Asia and India's desire for security vis-a-vis China and America.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the priorities shifted rapidly.

The delays that you are seeing are part-political (pre-MRCA pressure) and part-economical (falling value of dollar, rising labour costs, rising cost of raw materials,etc.).

Why does everyone forget that India is one of the largest buyers of Russian technology and perhaps is the best user of Russian weapon systems? We will be spending tens of billions of dollars in buying arms from Russia and will be spending tens of billions into the co-development of future weapon systems; that cannot be overlooked.

The Indo-Russian allaince ain't in decline; it is simply re-inventing itself and getting more professional and less ideological.

We still are their most trustworthy partners in the globe and will be for a long time to come regardless of how our relationship with Uncle Sam and Aunt EU is.

I just hope they make more shipyards in India so that we can make more ships in-house.

Actually, we don't really know the reasons for the Gorshkov delays, and are simply assuming that the Russians are trying to stall the project.

The more probable explanation is that the project has been mismanaged and have resulted in cost overruns.

Gorshkov was signed when the Russian economy was in tatters. Now, Russia is again building up its defence capabilities and it should be able to complete the projects on time.

The contract for the supply of 3 ships was signed in perhaps 2006 and work on 2 ships begain perhaps in 2006. All 3 ships are going to be delivered in 2012. This seems unlikely considering that the construction of 2 ships begain earlier than the third. How can all three be delivered at the same time. Either the first two are going to be delayed or the third be delivered earlier than schedule which by the way seems unlikely.
Another delay in the making it seems.
Than offcourse there is the price factor. The Russians are going to realize suddenly they need more money and you know the rest of the story.

I failed to understand what kind of a imagination force you to draw the conclusion of delays. You can even said that those ships can be begin to be deliver one by one any months of 2012.

Between six months to a year will be spent on trials, check ups and weaponization before handing them over to Indian navy. Then these shall be checked by IN. So you are in a agreement that three ships will be delivered by 2012.

If ships under construction since 2006 are not yet complete and shall be delivered in 2012 how can you expect a ship to be delivered in 2012 which just got started.

But where did you seen that ships aren't yet complated?

I think whole of your assessment is awary rather then a report.
