Gepard (Cheetah) class frigates





A Russian shipyard on Tuesday started work on a second pair of frigates for the Vietnamese navy, the shipbuilding company said.

The Gepard (Cheetah) class frigates are designed to guard and patrol the state border and economic zone, fight smuggling, poaching and piracy at sea and aid vessels in distress. They are armed with modern missile and artillery systems.

The first contract was signed in 2005, and the first two frigates entered service with Vietnam’s navy in 2011, the Kazan-based Zelenodolsk shipyard said in a statement.

The second contract was signed in February 2013. Unlike the first two, the new frigates feature antisubmarine weapons and an advanced propulsion system.

We expect to have over 10 frigates that size in near future. Some built right in Vietnam

Pffft 2 frigates. China is commissioning its 16th Type 054A which is far more advanced and far bigger and soon moving on to the next generation frigate which is far bigger and more advanced than Type 054A. Good luck Vietnam navy.

Why not just make a treaty not to blockade trade ships of any nation during war?

There will be allot less $$$ spent on military and more on development projects relating to Education, Health, Social reforms, Infrastructure. Studies have shown a correlation between money spent on these projects to have a greater impact on standards of living.

Well, realistically, China has to deal with a far greater number of different threats than any of it's smaller neighbours navies have to.... Vietnam is investing in a usefull force (esp considering their parallel acsquisition of SSKs and FACs).

Well i second this, China has so many threat from their immediate neighbor like Japan, US forces in Okinawa, Saipan and Guam, Vietnam, India, and Philippine. Their 100 Frigate programs cannot match the already large forces like JMSDF and USN.

China could spend useful 3 vs 1 in quantity in SCS if any military conflict arise ?
Let see the Sino-Viet conflict 1979, China fight outside their home base, rate 6 vs 1 and the result we known ...

AND they must keep a bigger backup force for any threat from Northern ( Soviet Union ).

Now China have more than 2 threats, Vietnam is not the big enemy and not worth test for China to challenge others.
in 1979, Vietnam has only ally - Soviet Union, and China backed by US ; but it's totally different at this moment.

If China attacks Vietnam, it's not easy for them like 1979 conflict, even 1979 conflict is not an easy too.

I don't want to post more pictures, but our per soldier spending far out shines yours, our soldiers are better equipped, supplied and trained.
