On 02.09 a bright slow bolid was observed around 6:30 CEST over US mid-west. Slow descent speed suggested that it was an artificial descent. Event was seen by at least several witnesses that confrimed object fragmentation in atmosphere.
There were only 4 objects that could descent from orbit at that time. 2 of them piece of debris and japanese sat were too small to cause such events, Chinese sat Yagoan 5 was confrimed entering atmosphere over indian ocean. Only remaining object was Russian Cosmos 2495 Cobalt-M satelite. In addition its orbit and timing were matching with data from 02.09 19:11 CEST
The speed and orbit made such "natural" entry impossible but bewen 20.18 and 20.26 CEST the satelite was supposed to launch its data pod containing intel gathered on orbit. Bewen 19 and 20 it should activate engines to enter a proper trajectory for data delivery.
What happend after 19:11 is unknown. Some independent Russian sources infromed that the de-acceleration ended prematurely leaving the satelite on wrong orbit. Then it circled earth 7 times more before entering atmosphere over USA. Cosmos 2495 was equiped with a self-destruct mechanism but judging from recording its unclear if it was activated. Even with the fragmentation in atmosphere some of the debris from 6.6 tones satelites fell on the ground somewhere in USA.
Cosmos 2495 was launched on 6.05.2014 at the height of Ukrainian crisis and despite claims from some Russian sources there is very high possibility that any intel gathered by it was lost along with the satelite.
