Russia snubs India, postpones defence minister's visit to New Delhi

.
I call BS. If Pakistan could offer more than India fine I'd find this news belivable but given Pakistan can't offer 1/50th of what India can (even with India spreading it's eggs in multiple baskets) it makes no sense for the Russians to make any overtures to Pakistan at India's expense nor start to favour Pakistan over India. I am not going to go down the "India-Russian brotherhood" nonsense route, but it is about cold hard $$$ at the end of the day and even if the proportion of Indian defence spending spent on Russian goods decreases this amount is always going be far higher than anyhting Pakistan can offer.

I accept the offical story-last minute issue to attend to, these things happen more than you'd expect.

Lets also see the current economic clout India posses or may also be losing:

Because of drought fears Indian economic experts have lowered her FY13 growth forecast to 5.4 percent and FY14 forecast to 6.2 percent. And if drought conditions worsen growth could drop to 4.9 percent this year.

The unstable political environment and corruption in political elite, economists think that in the last over an year markets have become increasingly disillusioned with the pace of reform, with a number of investment projects stalled and corruption allegations tainting the incumbent government. And the emergence of regional parties and Congress' dismal performance in state polls means they're starting to play it safe with their politics and economic policies.

Shortage of electricity is negatively impacting the growth. The recent power outage that left 50 percent of the country in darkness, and worsening power shortages are impacting growth. What's more notified power cuts are at record highs and do not cover a massive chunk of the country that isn't connected to the power grid.

Consumer confidence is low and could impact consumption. Unlike the slow down in investment which is well recorded, declining consumer confidence shows that consumption which has been stable could slow too.

The weakness in the rupee isn't helping exports, and exports are impacted by global demand despite marginal improvement. The share of exports in GDP has increased and while the weakness in the rupee would be expected to boost exports, the composition of India's exports is dominated by high-value goods, so the weaker rupee is unlikely to have a major impact. Rather exports will be affected by global demand. Export growth is expected to be soft in coming months.

.
Lets very briefly analyse the emerging geopolitical environment.

Geo-political environment is transitioning from American efforts to retain its uni-polarity to a stage where the emerging competitors are moving to a position of asserting their influence. Major US concerns focused on Asia include:

An emerging China.

Seeking and sustaining support for a countervailing India against China.

A resurgent Russia with an eye on Central Asia and a resurgent desire to reach warm waters through Pakistan.

A concerned Muslim world attempting to redefine its place in the world polity.

While US led efforts aimed at containment of Russia are stabilizing in Europe, endeavours to curtail Russian and Chinese influence in Eurasian hinterland are also underway.

What does US want from India:

India to act as a countervailing force against China.

As a milkman to sustain US economy.

Compete with Chinese economic progress.

Stabilize regional disputes with limited force projection capability.

Lets see what are India’s geopolitical and geostrategic strengths:

India cannot laterally expand its influence beyond its western borders due the existence of geo-political impediments in addition to the geographical restrictions placed by the presence of Pakistan, unless Pakistan allows it to do so.

Expansion of its influence towards the east is impeded due to the large geographical lay of China.

Myanmar can provide India with limited ability to expand towards South East Asia. Chinese influence in Myanmar has increased manifold and may limit future Indian endeavours.

Therefore the only direction it may be able to expand its influence is towards the vast expanse of sea in the south. The US also supports India’s increasing influence in IOR, but only as a second fiddle.

India would become a strong economic power and would be able to generate fair bit of economic influence in all those countries which are its trading partners and may also be able to exercise fair bit of negativity against Pakistan and China in this domain.

However, it’s overall power projection and generation of influence in the key regions would still remain limited unless it drastically improves relations with both Pakistan and China.

This fact also highlights the importance of strategic nature of Pak-China relationship.

Pakistan’s sympathetic leanings towards China is one of the major causes of Pak-US trust deficit.

However, the US in its endeavours to contain China is also eyeing Pakistan’s southern sea ports to acquire its own strategic corridor with links to Central Asian resources and to safeguard its interests.

Therefore, it is likely that the US will continue to act as Pakistan’s neighbour for quite some time through its presence in Afghanistan and the Gulf.

Therefore, India’s concerns as the time goes may not find due importance in places of import. This is so because India’s importance has diminished considerably due to her weakness at geopolitical and geo-strategic levels.
Okay so India, one of the fastest growing nations on earth that will soon be in the top 3 economies on earth is losing clout on the world stage?? You are talking absolute horses***! Look at the reality- India is getting clout over almost every nation on earth from Asia to S.America to Europe and its soft power is second only to the US. Your hypothesis is fundamentally flawed and anyway completely nonsensical. And you need to look away from this US-centrice perspective you have, India is an independant player and is using this indepandance to forge ever increasing partnerships around the world. No other world is doing so, so effectivly. India is the only nation able to maintain very strong relations with both Iran and Isreal (and the rest of the M.East to be fair) for instance.
Russia deferred the visit to finalize "a concrete proposal'' for the refit-repair package of the 44,570-tonne Vikramaditya.

India and Russia are also expected to discuss ongoing projects for 272 Sukhoi-30MKI fighters and 1,657 T-90 main-battle tanks.

And the we get to the truth!!

Special partners of india means only business how hard is to understand this for indians,

and then indians think that Russia will act as india will direct Russia to do so regarding Pakistan, lol.

nice balance approach there by Russians.

This is exactly what I'm saying! On balance India has much, much, much more to offer Russia than Pakitan. It is the Pakistani members here making out Russia is abondoning India for Pakistan.

So, a tiny economy with 3% GDP growth has more to offer. :woot: Further, you seems still following old news about monsoon.

Sir we are not saying Russia is trying to leave India for us, we know they only mean business with us too, but they are also aware of their interests, to me they are just trying to get new potential customers nothing wrong with that, right.

business have moderating variables one of them is 'mutual interests', maybe Russians are evaluating some lethal mutual interests in us.

.
And when I was telling you guys that India is losing its geopolitical clout, you were not listening to me.

But where we lost our geopolitical clout, kindly explain :woot:

In this case its not just business.

Apart from business there are regular cultural exchanges, economic co operations, R & D in science and technologies, joint gas exploration deals, student exchanges, scholarships etc etc...

And yes these are the best that can happen between any two countries.

There are Russian cultural and science centers in most major cities ... even there is one in my city, trivandrum which was called Soviet culture house before. Im an occasional visitor and whenever somebody says its just business, its indeed a laughing remark for people like me.

You need to understand that geopolitics is not subservient to geo-economics. There was a time when people use to think the geo-economy is ruling supreme, by they were proved wrong.

So while you can grow economically, which under the current environment, may take much longer than you guys think, if at all, yet the geopolitical clout may not be there to support you beyond a certain stage.

You people need to understand this fact. And I am not the only one who is saying this - many key American geopolitical analysts are also saying the same thing.

. . .
I think they are also done from explanation on Gorshkov and its going since last 3 yrs...

Wait for more words..

Nations formed from USSR also have cultural relations with India. They like Indians very much.
